Our company wants to install this software on all our mobile devices, to locate the devices in case of robbery or if it is lost. My concern is that this will be a means to track our whereabouts, ie. playing big brother.

The other problem I have is that the cell phone contract is on my name and it is only subsidised by the company, although the contract is bargained with the service provider through the company.

This include our laptops, which is the companies property

Is this legal?, or am i worrying about nothing

Not sure why your company would be interested to check your whereabouts ? are you a sales rep ? most IT admins dont have the time to check where you have been or what you have done unless its really necessary , since it is subsidized I guess its a win for you and a win for them - they can remotely remove company info from your phone if it does get stolen and remove any personal info you might not want other people to see. With the laptop you don't really have a choice since it belongs to the company , I dont think you need to be worried unless you have something to hide :D?

If the phones & laptops are owned by the company they can install whatever they want on them. If it's your property you don't have to do it.

Becoming more and more common. We have MDM software which we install on clients devices, it has the ability to track but we have never actually tracked anyone. Handy for wiping devices when employees leave.

If you aren't doing anything wrong then why worry? It will most probably only be used if they are trying to fire you... Also, in most cases notebooks can also report approx locations without you knowing and don't forget about tracker.

Edit: also, some guys do it to stick to compliance, if you want access to company data (ie email) then you need to surrender the ability for the device to be managed remotely.

I am in construction and a project manager on a couple of sites.
Nothing to hide, just don't like the idea that they are able to know my whereabouts 24/7.

........ and I would still like to play games on my laptop, when staying over at hotels when visiting some of my sites;)

Meraki Solution

Hi Vercogen

Location tracking using Meraki MDM on laptops is based on the Public IP address, so not very accurate. The main goal of MDM is however to remotely deploy Wi-Fi Settings, VPN Settings, eMail Settings and Applications, wherever the asset it.

The possibility to play Big Brother is there, but from what I've seen from our customers, the normal day-to-day job responsibilities quickly take over from any novelty of being able to see exactly whats happening with a laptop. In the end it's used as an administrative tool only.

Regards
