As much I like VW's and don't buy the whole "hijack risk" a buddy of mind go his previous shape base-model Polo (round lights) stolen. It was latter recovered but they skelms ****ed it up big time!

He now drives a 2006 f/fift Polo 1.9 tdi 3-door Sportline...go figure lol

And that in itself was around under R110k purely because they hold their value so well.

Insurance is there if the car gets stolen, it doesn't help when you get shot/stabbed/assaulted during a high-jacking.

Then don't buy a fancy phone or fancy electronics because they can also be stolen and you can be shot/stabbed/assaulted while that's happening.
Living your life on a maybe won't make you very happy.

If you leave your valuables advertised in your car, you have a higher risk of being a victim of a smash and grab.

Just because it hasn't happened doesn't mean that risk doesn't exist.

I'm not saying don't buy something because of a risk factor, but don't ignore that it exists.

Then you are obviously approaching the wrong insurance companies. It is more about age, and claims history, than anything else. I am paying R700pm or so to insure my R642000 M235i.

+1

Same here. I think I have been using the right insurance companies

Ditto - I'm paying just over R550 per month to insure a R440k G7 GTI, shop around and combine your household and vehicle insurance
