New Mercedes-Benz T-Class confirmed! Small van-based model coming

Mercedes-Benz Vans has confirmed a new “small” van-based model called the T-Class will join its range in the first half of 2022.

Like the upcoming new Citan, the fresh-faced T-Class will be “established in co-operation with” the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance. Of course, the X-Class bakkie was also conceived in partnership with the Alliance, but the Navara-based bakkie has since been canned.

The Stuttgart-based firm says the new vehicle will be “tailored to the needs of families” while also being “a suitable companion for active leisure enthusiasts”, all at “an attractive price-value ratio”. What this means for the future of the B-Class remains to be seen.

Spy Shots: 2021 Mercedes Benz T-Class

Mercedes-Benz is readying its van successor to the Citan. Dubbed the 'T-Class', this commercial offering will be taking on the popular Volkswagen Caddy.

There's something endearing about vans. Not only are the driving manners generally excellent, but the additional practicality is also welcome. We at Cars.co.za are quite fond of vans and have had some memorable experiences in them over the years. One of our staffers even forked out his hard-earned money and bagged himself an Opel Combo.

The van segment will be moving along nicely in 2021, with an all-new Volkswagen Caddy due to make landfall in South Africa, and this offering from Mercedes-Benz is scheduled for a reveal in early 2021. Developed in conjunction with Renault (itself a brand known for its Kangoo offering), the Mercedes-Benz T-Class has been spotted undergoing on-the-road testing. We suspect it will share powertrains too, which will mean we could expect petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid options. Given the European market's shift into electrification, we won't be surprised if there's an all-electric version either.

First drive: 2022 Mercedes-Benz Citan prototype review

New small van-based people carrier is driven for the first time in pre-production form

The original Citan was Mercedes-Benz’s first attempt at a practical light commercial vehicle (LCV) in a market segment that continues to show solid growth in the UK.

Conceived to challenge the likes of the Volkswagen Caddy, Citroën Berlingo, Peugeot Partner and Vauxhall Combo among others, it was introduced in 2012 in a wide range of configurations with the choice of three wheelbases and a multitude of seating layouts aimed at making it emulate the success of the larger Vito.

Reflecting the new approach, Mercedes has decided to split the line-up in two; commercial vehicle variants retain the Citan name, but the more extensively equipped, leisure-orientated passenger versions of the new model will now be sold under the T-Class name.

Before the two new models are launched later this year, we’ve been given the chance to drive a prototype of the new Citan during validation testing in and around the company’s Immendingen research-and-development facility in Germany.

It looks like the Daimler group is not going to slow down with its EV reveals anytime soon. Next in line to break cover is the Mercedes-Benz EQT which has been positioned as an electrified minivan. The official reveal has been slotted in for next month.

The Mercedes-Benz EQT will be the forerunner for the upcoming T-Class which will compete in the small van segment. The reason for this is to stick to the brand’s “electric first” strategy. The near-production concept will offer a clear glimpse of what to expect from the newly-developed city van which will replace the current Citan.

With the new Mercedes-Benz EQT, the brand’s vans arm is transferring the winning formula of the V-Class to a compact format. The German manufacturer says that this will bring a new level of quality to the small-van segment. Expect the EQT to combine a spacious and variable interior with attractive design and Mercedes’ hallmark high standards of comfort, connectivity, value and safety.

It is understood that, like the Citan, the EQT and T-Class are expected to share a platform with the upcoming Renault Kangoo.

The near-series-production concept vehicle combines ample and versatile space for up to seven occupants and a generous luggage compartment with a Mercedes-typical design and approach to high-class appeal, comfort, functionality, connectivity and safety. Mercedes-Benz Vans is thus translating the V-Class's recipe for success into a compact format, bringing a new premium quality into the small van segment. The Mercedes-Benz Concept EQT previews the brand’s new T-Class MPV, the electric version of which will be the ninth model from its EQ sub-brand.

Based on the upcoming second-generation Citan light commercial vehicle (LCV), the concept showcases Mercedes’ plans for an LCV-derived MPV offered with petrol, diesel and pure-electric drivetrains. Combustion variants will be sold as the T-Class, while the EV will take the EQT name into production.

"We are expanding our portfolio with the T-Class. It will appeal to families and private customers who enjoy leisure activities and need a lot of space and maximum variability. And as the Concept EQT shows: we will also be offering a fully electric model in this segment in the future," says Marcus Breitschwerdt, head of Mercedes-Benz Vans.

Set to rival the Volkswagen Caddy, Citroen Berlingo and Vauxhall Combo when UK sales get underway in 2022, the new model has been developed in partnership with Renault; the T-Class is twinned with the third-generation Kangoo, while the EQT is a sister model to the recently announced Kangoo E-Tech Electric.

Mercedes-Benz EQT concept revealed as premium miniature V-Class

The Mercedes-Benz EQT concept has been revealed as a preview of the brand’s upcoming premium compact MPV, the T-Class and its electric variant. The brand claims that this is the first product of its kind because it brings advanced technologies and luxurious tones to the segment.

The Mercedes-Benz EQT concept is aimed at private customers that are keen on leisure activities. Being an all-electric product, the new van is able to offer generous and versatile packaging although a utility figure is not quoted. It measures 4 945 mm long, 1 863 mm wide and 1 826 mm tall, and features sliding doors on both sides and a large rear opening with a third row that can be accessed with ease. Three child seats can be fitted next to each other in the second row of seats, making it an ideal product for larger families. For added drama, the Mercedes-Benz EQT concept comes equipped with a panoramic roof with the starscapes to flood the interior with light.

As for materials, the cabin makes use of white Nappa leather for the seats and recycled leather for the seat centre panel. The instrument panel has been penned as the highlight of the cabin. The upper section is shaped like a wing inspired by a seashore pebble and flows into the instrument cluster. Adding to practicality is a semi-closed stowage compartment, located above the instrument cluster for easy access to important items. Additionally, round air vents in high-gloss black, galvanised trim elements and the multifunction steering wheel with Touch Control buttons underline modern appearance. The ambient lighting on the centre console, doors and in the foot well adds to the advanced atmosphere.

Mercedes-Benz is preparing to launch its production version T-Class small van but to whet our appetites and give us a little taste of what's to come, check out the EQT Concept.

Mercedes-Benz continues to offer a model for every conceivable segment and while this concept is tagged as an 'EQ' model, there will be conventional petrol and diesel engines for the standard production Mercedes-Benz T-Class.

The Mercedes-Benz T-Class is the replacement for the Citan, but interestingly the Citan name will stay on as a commercial offering. Think of the Mercedes-Benz T-Class as a rival to the Volkswagen Caddy. The upcoming Mercedes-Benz T-Class will be co-developed alongside the Renault Kangoo, a popular model for both passengers and cargo in the European market.

The Mercedes-Benz EQT Concept confirms the Stuttgart-based manufacturer will be investing in electrification across its portfolio. If the EQT gains the same electric powertrain from the Renault Kangoo E-Tech, then expect a range of around 265 km. The internal combustion engines will also make an appearance for the standard T-Class and these are expected in the form of Renault's 1.3-litre turbopetrol and 1.5-litre turbodiesels.

Updated photographs show the 2023 Mercedes-Benz T-Class is a step closer to a production reveal as some of the camouflage has been shed. Here’s Mercedes-Benz’s answer to the Volkswagen Caddy.

The development of the Mercedes-Benz rival to the popular Volkswagen Caddy is progressing nicely, with the mule you see here showing off some details like the headlights and grille. We can also see the side windows and rear windows for the first time.

Under the skin, the 2023 Mercedes-Benz T-Class is underpinned by the Renault Kangoo, which is available in both passenger and commercial applications. We suspect Mercedes-Benz will adopt a similar strategy. Expect the two products will share powertrains too, which will mean we could expect petrol, diesel, and plug-in hybrid options. Mercedes-Benz Commercial Vehicles is getting ready to pull the covers off its new-generation Citan compact van, and this one also sets the stage for a significant range expansion, which will include a fully electric variant called the eCitan as well as a more luxurious people hauler called the T-Class.

Like the first-generation Mercedes-Benz Citan, the second iteration will be based on the Renault Kangoo, through the company’s ties with the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance. However, this time around the compact van will be offered with a choice between conventional combustion engines and a fully-electric powertrain.

While the Citan will be focused on the commercial market, the T-Class will be a more luxurious and passenger-oriented model, and this too will spawn an electric variant, as previewed by the recent EQT Concept.

Mercedes-Benz hasn’t announced the reveal date for the T-Class as yet, but we do know that the Citan is set to debut on August 25. The German carmaker promises that its new (albeit somewhat outsourced) van will offer comprehensive safety equipment and a high level of driver comfort.

Compact external dimensions coupled with a generous amount of space and a high load capacity open up a diverse range of applications for the new Mercedes-Benz Citan, especially in inner-city delivery and service provision operations. It is available both as a Panel Van and a Tourer. New Mercedes-Benz Citan is firm's last combustion-powered van

Renault Kangoo twin arrives with petrol, diesel and EV options; will spawn premium T-Class

The new second-generation Mercedes-Benz Citan, which has been revealed ahead of a market launch in Germany next month, will be the last model from Mercedes-Benz Vans to offer a combustion engine option.

Twinned with the Renault Kangoo and available as either in Panel Van or Tourer MPV guises, the Citan will be priced from less than €20,000 (£17,100) in its most basic form but will soon spawn an upmarket passenger-carrying version called the T-Class, as previewed by a boldly styled concept earlier this year.

The small van has been substantially redesigned to bring it into line more obviously with Mercedes' passenger car line-up. The company highlights the vehicle's "muscular shoulders" and "striking wheel wells" as standout features, but emphasises that ease of use remains the top priority.

The standard version is 4498mm in length, offering a 3050mm-long load bay in the van variant, but short- and extended-wheelbase options will follow, including a Mixto variant with a half-cargo, half-passenger-carrying format.
