Sanzar has taken the ground-breaking step of empowering its top match officials to referee more of the best matches in Super 14, ensuring the highest standard of refereeing in its 2009 competitions, it was announced Monday.

In effect, this will allow a referee from one of the Sanzar countries to referee in matches involving teams from his country, regardless of the opponent.

I really do think this is an idiotic step ...... don't even try tell me that it will be completely unbiased  What do you chaps think about it?

Yeah not great. Then again you get bias when they ref two foreign teams. A NZ ref gives a dodgy performance against an S.A side if S.A losing to Aus in that game benefits a N.Z team in the log for example

Well cricket has been doing it for a long time now.

I think this is a good step, now with it being merit based the refs will know that if they make shakey calls thez won't ref as many games thus loosing around R5000-R10000 a game IIRC.

Well I think they can use any ref they want, but the ref should be held accountable for his decisions, and during game time, should be adressed if he is making a crappy call, most of these little issues can be addressed by the tv ref

I would like to see refs from Europe blowing Super 14 matches. They would definitely be neutral and it would give the Southern Hemisphere players an idea of how the Northern Hemispheres refs blow the rules cause sometimes we just don't know...

I think it's a good move, NZ and even more so AUS have dropped their ref standard so badly now, that the refs as evidenced in S14 aren't even close to club standard let alone provincial and S14 standard.
