Hi Guys,

I've recently got Metro 2033 and I've been messing around with the graphics settings trying to get the best performance but I've got a question for the guys that know a little more about hardware than me.

A few months ago I bought a HD 5850 Black Edition which is holding up pretty damn well at the moment but I've been thinking of getting a new CPU.

The game is pretty resource hungry on DX11 with high settings and it is not recommended to run at very high settings with a single GPU setup.

So this makes me wonder now, should I get another GPU or should I rather upgrade my CPU because I think it's my CPU that is falling short with most games, like Battlefield Bad Company 2 and this one.

My specs are
CPU: Intel Q8400 Quad @ 2.66 GHz
RAM: 4 GB DDR2 800
GPU: ATI 5850 Black Edition

If anyone has a suggestion, or have experience with an ATI crossfire setup and it's performance advantages I would appreciate it :)

Maybe not. Requirements are pretty high...
Minimum System Requirements:
Dual core CPU (any Core 2 Duo or better will do)
DirectX 9, Shader Model 3 compliant graphics cards (GeForce 8800, GeForce GT220 and above)
1GB RAM
Recommended System Requirements:
Any Quad Core or 3.0+ GHz Dual Core CPU
DirectX 10 compliant graphics card (GeForce GTX 260 and above)
2GB RAM
Optimum System Requirements:
Core i7 CPU
NVIDIA DirectX 11 compliant graphics card (GeForce GTX 480 and 470)
As much RAM as possible (8GB+)
Fast HDD or SSD
Enabling Nvidia 3D Vision:
Metro 2033 utilizes NVIDIA 3D Vision with compatible cards and hardware. To play in 3D you will require:
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 275 and above recommended
A 120Hz (or above) monitor
NVIDIA 3D Vision kit
Microsoft Windows Vista or Windows 7

Just try ocing your cpu first to see if it's a cpu bottleneck. Most likely it's a software issue though.

must be a game issue , ive got latest drivers for mobo , gfx , sound blah blah , i played it on dx11 , on high quality , BUT , dissabled the AA setting in the dx11 options . i just played with tesselation on. because my graphics card is on the mid range side of the nation lol. when enabling that AA setting , it does look really nicer , but its not needed as most of the times the monsters are quick and then you get this crap blur and it confuses you lol

i can hit just cause 2 on max , with or without vsync with AAx2 , i only notice tearing when using a power boat but really its so minor. really amazed what this card can do for the price :)

I had a little bit of a performance issue with Metro 2033, even though my machine is pretty beefy (3.6ghz quad, 8gb ram, 9800gtx+...). I have uninstalled it since I finished it, but as far as I can remember there was a setting called "use advanced physics" in the game options, not in the graphics options, I disabled that and things smoothed out quite a lot.

Thanks for the advice guys.

The thing is, I can't overclock because my motherboard is locked. No OC'ing for me :(

But my concern is that although I have a quad, it's speed (2.66 GHz) is not that fast. When I first got my quad I saw huge performance gains also because my old CPU was running at 2 GHz, but I rate a fast processor would make a great difference.

I did some reading on tweaking this game and I found that going into the user.ini file (If you have the steam version you have to edit both the one in Users/yourname/appdata/local/4Agames/) and turning vsync to "on" and enabling triple buffering using ATI tray tools/Nvidia control panel gave me quite a big fps gain. There's also another setting called r_gi that they recommend setting to 1 because it's a lighting method that is more efficient with DX 10 & 11. In most cases it gives an fps gain but for some it doesn't. I also turned off the Advanced PhysX option, that just messes up all my textures and slows it down to a crawl.

The games runs pretty sweet most of the time, but sometimes during the large fights i get slowdowns which makes it hard to shoot those scary motherfudgers. So that's why I was thinking getting a faster CPU to manage all the action, and maybe a new motherboard and CPU with some DDR3 memory because my card is really awesome. I must say after the Catalyst 10.4 drivers things are looking much better in terms of performance.

So maybe a CPU/motherboard/ upgrade and then getting another card for crossfire later? Another thing- when you're using crossfire, do the cards need to be the same?

EDIT: Oh yes and the game is legit as can be :D

Upgrade your cpu and mobo dude, if you have the cash get an i7 920 with a decent good overclocking board.

These console ports love fast quad cores.

One thing i can say about ATI and dx 11 is that the FPS drop off is rather horrible. Take bfbc2 for instance i can be running 110 FPS with high settings but let a tank put a shell in front of me and it dips below 40.

I think these dx 11 at the moment are entry level dx 11 cards which are struggling to handle loads of effects.

Strange, I dont notice any drops in fps while playing, but I dont have the fps showing either so dont know for a fact what the actual numbers are on my rig. I wonder if its a xfire problem? You're running xfire 5770s right?

This game isn't a console port. The 4A Engine is heavily geared towards multi-threading, though.

In case anyone is wondering, yes it is made by some of the guys from GSC Gameworld, who used to work on the X-Ray Engine.

Edit: the game is, btw, extremely hardware intensive, approaching Crysis levels.

Yeah guys, I re-tested the game with DX11 last night. I turned off Advanced DOF and left tessellation on as well as put it to 16x AF. It was running leka with Vsync and TB turned on. So maybe it's not my card afterall. My card seems great, it's definitely the CPU that can't handle the action when things get busy.

It's just that the i7's are just so DAMN expensive for no good reason. Geez.

can't believe this mate... i put all my settings in-game to high , running @ 1680x1050 , constant FPS of 90-100 and no matter what i never get a frame drop...i do get alot of tearing on the screen though...if i turn around fast it seems like the screen is cut in half...anyone getting the same problems???

Turn vsync on, should sort that out

i do in most games....and yes, it does work....sorry but i didnt mention that its only in BF BC2 that i get those tearing...no matter what setting i change or improve, vsync just doesnt work....and, strangly enough...FEAR get 25fps on my rig....WTF???

BFBC2 has some issues with its vsync. Try disabling vsync in game, but then force it on for everything through (in your case) catalyst control center. No idea why FEAR is running so slow though

ja its strange that FEAR issue... on the subject of ati CCC , i use all the defualt settings and change my prefered settings in-game...do you guys do it the other way around or is there only certain settings to change in order to get the most out of your gfx card???

Yeah guys, the problem with PC gaming is the vast number of chipset combinations. Lone Wolf that sounds really weird dude. FEAR out of all games.. It could be anything.. Driver issue, chipset issue, unsupported hardware, software problem.. geez.. The things we do to play games these days :(

Dude, the only setting I changed in CCC is the mip-map setting. I changed it to Quality instead of High-Quality (I changed it to the second last option on the slider).

By the way dude, have you updated to Catalyst 10.4 yet?

lol yeah i agree with you ... the things, AND MONEY, we do/spend to play games .... sigh.... is still an awesome hobby though ;-)

i cant see how it can be chipset related...BIOS and everything else is up to date...maybe the game needs a patch??? i just installed it to see how it would run... not like im playing it extensively.

has METRO 2033 got MP???? is it any good??? would you recommend the game ???

yes i have, running preview 10.4 atm.... i did saw the faster loading times in BFBC2 , which is good...havent played FEAR again since installation of 10.4
