Metro cop 'caught assaulting a taxi driver'

Video footage of a metro police officer assaulting a taxi driver has been made public by Talk Radio 702's Eyewitness News (EWN).

This apparently took place outside an office park in Bruma on February 28, although the CCTV footage shows the date to be October 1.

The edited clip on the EWN website shows a taxi parked at a corner. Passengers, who had apparently been ordered out, are gathered around the taxi.

A metro police officer, said to be from the K9 Unit, approaches taxi driver Sipho Mkhize, who can be seen talking animatedly, waving what appears to be a piece of paper.

News reporter Nomsa Maseko does a voice-over on the clip. She says Mkhize is being threatened with arrest and the impounding of his taxi.

He is said to then have asked for a traffic fine, apparently angering the metro officer.

The metro officer, who was accompanied by a female police officer, walks towards his marked vehicle, parked behind the taxi.

He is followed by Mkhize, who stands close to him as he leans into the car and grabs hold of a pepper spray. The metro officer turns quickly and sprays Mkhize in the face.

The edited footage shows the officer assaulting Mkhize in front of his taxi, hitting him until he falls to the ground. Mkhize is then handcuffed and forced back into
his taxi.

Shame poor taxi driver LOL

taxi drivers and metro officers... I view them with the same "respect"

ever since that debacle during the strike last year... I am convinced they all come from the same evolutionary tree!

You mean the evolutionary shrub right?:D

Bet you that the taxi driver was trying to bribe the officer and for once the officer refused.

I have to say, there was probably a reason for this. Anyway, I do see metro police pulling over taxis on a regular basis, and letting cars and busses pass without being pulled over. They appear to have no mercy/sympathy for taxis. So they should stick to that.
