Wow they push back even further now. what happen to 2nd half 2006
 
Now here is a question :

Telkom continually goes on about the costs to maintain its network, the costs to build in the infrastructure for DSL and other facilities, and yet Municipalitites put in their own infrastructure, from scratch, and build it better than the Telkom facilities , and they do it cheaper and save MILLIONs per months yet Telkom goes on about how expensive everything is ... Now why is the Telkoms cost so HIGH if they by theory can be done so low ?!
 
Telecommunications consultant Dr Raven Naidoo said the municipalities would save millions by ditching Telkom.

“It will be easy to show how much they can potentially save and how Telkom has been price-gouging people for a very long time.”

Costs...Infrastructure?...I've been waiting for ADSL for 3 years and still no sign in site for ADSL...

thumb their noses at Telkom? Scuse me did u try and call a Municipal department lately? They have now ALL got Telkoms recorded charmers on the other end and nine times out of 10 im willing to bet the consumer gives up and hangs up and makes a few more million for Telkom.
Its a case of u scratch my back and ill scratch yours...no nose-thumbing involved at all....
A case in point - the Mthinyane Service Contractors working for Ethikwinis Security Electricity Dept? Fiddling with street lights is their forte and now i see recently one of their bakkies went past with what looked remarkably like a hand written sign on the front door saying 'contracted to Telkom'
I doubt VERY much whether there is anything other than massive back-patting and handshakes all round going on here heheh...

Telkom vs Tshwane municipality

Tshwane (aka Pretoria) electricity hardly ever answers their phones.

I'm not holding my breath for Internet over my power lines. They have a hard time keeping the power in the lines as it is.

When they were licensed, the SNO-Telecom did give a little info with regard to their service rollout. Latter-half of 2006 was earmarked for entering the corporate market, while 2nd Quarter 2007 being when services to residential clients may begin.

It would be great to get an update from SNO-T on where they are now and how far on / off track they are with regards to servicing normal clients (esp. wrt ADSL). I'm not talking corporate secrets or anything, just a little peace-of-mind for consumers that currently have no choice other than to wait patiently for Telkom.

The one aspect to look forward to is that in terms of their licensing, municipalities are not allowed to service clients directly. They would have to outsource Internet Provisioning to a 3rd-party company. Hopefully, they won't follow the same poor service levels as the overburdened municipalities or the telecoms-cartel currently in operation. Today's poll is funny. It reads: "Which company do you think has the best customer support?" when in fact, it should read: "From a South African perspective, which of the following companies do you think is the best of the bunch?" :p

Edit: Yeah, I was under the impression from their homepage (like Dominic pointed out) that rollout was starting 2nd quarter 2006 (which we're in now approach 3rd quarter), with residential rollout 4th quarter 2006.

hmmmmm.....
