First, I have to be honest that I'm not very clued up on the watch industry, but my personal opinion on buying them:

1) If I can afford to pay R8000-00 for a watch, I'm going to buy it new, so to sell me a second hand watch that cost R8000-00 when new, you'd have to drop the price significantly. Think R5000-00 or so.

2) If the watch is in EXCELLENT condition, then I'd consider paying a little bit more. Try get the watch cleaned up nicely before posting pics of it for "appraisal".

3) I will not EVER buy a watch worth over R1000-00 from someone without having a guarantee from a reputable jeweller that the watch is genuine. Heard of too many people paying a couple grand for a "Rolex" that turned out to be a "Bolex".

4) What is her reason for selling? Someone selling "because they need the money" is dodgy. Why did they buy it in the first place? Someone selling a watch that gave issues is more believable, but then the price drops significantly too (unless the issues have been resolved and this can be proven). The reasons that I would want to hear: "I bought the watch on impulse and have now decided it doesn't suit me", "It was a gift, but I prefer another watch that I have", "It was a gift, but I already had one exactly like it".

Get a proper valuation from a Jeweler, and post it on Gumtree and the classifieds for that exact value. See if anyone bites.

I don't know if you're in jhb, but there's a guy in Rosebank (lower, near the design center) who specialises in luxury watches and could value it, and maybe offer resell advice.

If you can then try to get out of this "assignment". Chances are good that she will be disappointed with the price she gets.

I'd say 4k if she/you is lucky. Luxury watches are normally sold with 100% markup. "Fashion" brand watches will get hit harder than say a Rolex/TAG imo.

eeerrrr!!!! what were we supossed to look at? i went to your link and saw a picture of a naked dog thing suntanning on the beach.

Eight grand for a watch!?!?!? She's gotta be coo-coo! Could get a nice PC for that! I suppose she'd say "Eight grand for a PC!?!?!":D

Hey guys.. Thanks for the replies... Yeah she's in financial difficulties so that's the reason she wants to sell it. I said don't because it's a really nice watch and she'll get next to nothing for it anyway but she's decided to go that route so that's that.

I'll let her know about the place in Rosebank and she can at least get the valuation done. Shame i really feel sorry for her cos she's has such a bad run of luck and she's got 2 little girls... Shame..

Off topic, but that is really not my taste in watches.

Currently, I do not wear a watch and haven't done so for the past 5 years. I just prefer not to, would rather wear a nice bracelet or bangles.

If I really had to choose a watch though, it would look like this: http://www.baume-et-mercier.com/collection/collection.aspx?ln=en&id_collection=8&id_product=110

Why is she selling it, why buy it in the first place?? To me watches are for the individual and taste, me personally I wouldn't buy a second hand watch. She is best keeping it.
