Microsoft and open source

The very first piece of OpenSource sofware released by Microsoft is Wix (Windwos Installer XML). Its the best product on the market to create windows installer packages (*.msi, *.msp, etc).

Microsoft is doing more than some people would like to admit.

It is impressive to see how well you can host PHP applications on IIS 7.0 and 7.5. I think Microsoft realized that they can make things easier for their clients if they give better FastCGI support on IIS. Plus this simplify things for businesses that makes use of both .NET and PHP applications.

Miguel De Icaza of Novell

No surprise there, ever since Novell went into agreement with MS you'd expect as much surely?

Personally, I dont trust the intentions of MS. I feel it'll try and exploit the community for advertising as well as using the "free" code to integrate into MS. Instead of paying a programmer for code, ask the community to do it while reaping in ad rewards.

I fee it's a bit late though, there are others who've exploited communities already. Facebook, wiki, mypsace, deviantart are all communities that create content (for free) so that the site can profit from it (in one way of another).

Lol, MS wrote Kernel code and submitted it but it was a complete balls up and needed otehr guys to fix it.

I'll believe MS is serious about getting into Open Source when Satan is selling Ice Cones.

I think many miss the point here ( including the author ) - Microsoft have never done anything pro-consumer unless pressured ( by legal process or otherwise ) or for profit. The only reason they've made such a fuss of PHP on Windows is because of the vast base out on the Internet that they are missing out on ( profit ) and to possibly mess around with standards to confuse consumers ( OOXML ). The only reason they opened up documentation to the Samba team on network protocols is due to their loss of the EU court case that was brought against them ( legal ). The only reason there is a browser ballot in the EU version of Win 7 is because of the pressure put on them but the EU commission ( legal ). The only reason the Hyper-V LIC was released under GPL was because they were found to be in contravention of the license ( legal ). And so it goes on. While I'm sure there are many good fine souls in Microsoft, the marketing and management people seem to have the last say - and that is profit against all else. This lack of basic understanding of the open source and other markets will lead to their eventual downfall.

Why is everyone so anti Microsoft ? Its pathetic how people always want something for nothing. The ironic part is I bet all you "Anti-Microsoft" whiners probably use just as many Microsoft developed products as the next person.

Whats your excuse or reason for using MS products when you hate MS so much ?I would love to hear it!

You assume that everyone uses ms products, and then demand to know why?

Well 90% of the people on this forum is anti-Microsoft, but I fail to see where he demanded anything. He simply asked the anit-Microsoft guys why they are anti-Microsoft when they actually use quite a lot of the company's products.

And you know this for a fact?
You both make blanket statements, stating that all anti-ms persons actually use ms products.
Can you list all the ms products I am using right now?

Whether you use or not is irrelevant to what he asked. He asked why the anti-Microsoft people are anti-Microsoft.

Anyways, I highly doubt that you do not use a single MS product, they have more software out there that you would want to believe.

If you have used a Standard Bank atm you have indirectly used MS software...
