Microsoft bailing on Vista

With a downturn in the economy, people are going to be looking to save money any way they can and the good old MS OS tax may start to feel it. That and I am sure OpenOffice is already biting a bit.

How does Openoffice equate with Vista?

Microsoft's got several sources of revenue, one of them is their bloated Office suite.

OpenOffice 3 is worth trying out - it can read and write Office2003 and 2007 file formats, and starts up faster than OpenOffice2.x

Open Source vs Propriety?

I would not like to see the demise of MS, because that will make for an unstable OS market with only Linux and Mac left.

Competition is always good, I would just like to see more transparency, more lenient EULAS and competitive pricing.

Open office is an office suite set of programs which runs on, amongst other things, Vista.

Vista is an OS.

Openoffice will not affect Vista sales.

Add to that no more dirty tricks to stop open source programs from communicating with their proprietary junk, then it might work...

How does Openoffice equate with Vista?

MS have 2 primary sources of revenue:

1) OS - Vista
2) Office

If either one takes a knock, it puts tremendous pressure on them to get more revenue from the other. In other words, if they start hurting because of a drop in Office sales because of OpenOffice, that makes Windows 7 even more important to their bottom line and crucial to their ongoing success.

Let me just say that I am glad I chose to copy/pirate Vista rather than buy it... R3000 would have been waisted.

Linux is my main OS now anyway.
