What would you guys say, get a Microsoft Certification or get a Degree from a university?
I'm currently doing a bit of both, haven't touched the dev side on the Microsoft Certifications but have been doing the Server 2012 stuff.

Both I plausible I suppose, but leaves little time for that thing called life.

edit : Doing a BSc Computing through Unisa ATM.

Two different things.
Get both, and you're much better off :D

Carry on with the degree. It's good to have a theory foundation. Then Microsoft certifications you can also do on the side but you find you want to drop 1, rather drop the Microsoft Certification and pick it up at a later stage when you do have the time.

This.
Although the M$ certs change so often, to keep up with the newest .NET version. That's the only downside... but to be expected.

Degree is essential for further advancement later on in your career. It also gives you a solid foundation in theory which the cert courses don't. The cert just says that you're proficient in a specific technology. The theory foundation from a degree will make a cert so much easier to attain. Of course, some aspects of what you learn during your degree may become outdated with time. So do a cert every few years to stay up to date and show that you are committed to keeping abreast of new advancements.

So, degree and certification. If time is a problem then degree first, cert later.

Agree with all of the above. This shouldn't even be a question. Degree is primary.

This question has been asked plenty of times and you'll get the same answer every time.

Cert becomes outdated a degree lasts for ever.
Cert could lead to immediate job but only go for it if you are assured a job and need to pay your bills.

It all depends if you want to relocate to Europe, or America, in the near future.

The degree won't help much, but a Microsoft certification is recognized worldwide.

But if you're planning to stay in South Africa, the degree is definitely the best option.

Ultimate option : degree + Microsoft certification. :)

Degree trumps Microsoft certifications in most cases in the UK as well. Probably in the EU as well.

If the institution is recognised worldwide, the qualification should be too...

You are kidding right?

No, not at all.

When I worked in the UK, the only qualification I had to produce, was my Microsoft one, and I got the job.

Worked there for almost five years and it was Microsoft all the way.

Most of the recruiters did not have any knowledge about South African universities/technikons.

It might have changed now?

That's not the point though. Your opportunities to advance later on become limited without a degree.

Having both is best, but if you have to prioritise, degree first.

I said to have a degree + Microsoft qualification is the best option.

Best to get the degree first, as, depending with certification you choose, it might be good to get some working experience before writing the Microsoft exams.

Ta guys, will drop certs for now... By the time I finish my degree a recap. On the certs will be very near so I might as well do them then.

Degree + certs are definitely the ultimate
