Microsoft debuts Media Center

media center 2005

not

media centre 2005

MS still believes everybody should spell like americans. The article got it wrong a number of times.

P.S. where are the Pal-I media center extenders? Non existent, thats where....you can get an ntsc one, which will playback at the wrong framerate on pal material and doesnt handle 16:9 properly, or buy an xbox360. As if...

and that is the point I am making. The product is called
"Media Center Edition 2005", like it or lump it. American spelling.

The article kept referring to "Media Centre 2005". British/S.A. spelling. Such a product doesnt technically exist and just spouts poor journalism if you cant even take the time to spell the name of the thing you are commenting on the way it is meant to be spelt (even if it isnt "your" way)

im just wondering, when will it be availible here then???
iv got Media Center 2005 (and its a legal copy for those of u wondering), but i dont hav a remote and i dont think R600 is really wourth it to import one

the remotes are about ÂŁ26 each here (which includes the receiver and 2 irblasters).

I could do a bulk buy if I could find enough people I could trust. The local s.a. distributors are being daft with their prices for these things.

If, however, you have no interest in controlling an external set top box, then you can pretty simply build an lirc supported serial device, and then use any random remote to program up, down, left, right, ch+, ch-, enter and back and you will have about 99% functionality. But that would only work for terrestrial broadcasts...if you want to control a dstv/mnet/other-random-set top box you WILL need the official remote+receiver.

They're not completely adverse to spelling it 'centre'. 'Product Information Centre' and 'Development Centre' are both used on their UK homepage.

Perhaps its just for products?

yes, in the uk microsoft use uk spelling for their departments etc, as they should do, but that still doesnt change the fact that the product is called "media center" and is spelt like that at all times..

anyway:-) just me being picky...carry on...

Why do you want MS Media Center/Centre?
Rather go for MythTV, does the same thing only it's free (excluding hardware).
www.mythtv.org

simple...I dont want to play tech support person when I get home and help my wife try figure out how my nice new "tv" works. The same argument can be made for windows, but, truth be told, you are not the first to suggest this, and there is also media portal, and sage tv, and beyondtv, and gbpvr and about 20 others, so the user can make their mind up. The fact remains, with mce2005, YOU S.A. chaps now have a wider choice, and isnt that what it is all about?

Wouldnt want mythtv to have a "monopoly" on the local s.a. htpc market, would we?

I got one installed at home. Works like a dream. For pricing and informatioin go to www.mediacenter.co.za. Theres alot of pre-requisitest that you need. Basically if the hardware spec is not "Media Center/Centre" ready on the MS Website dont bother trying to set it up.

And yes it works with my DSTV of which I have the Dual View connected to the Media Center. Watch live and record something in the background.

If you need further info PM me.
