Microsoft has acquired GitHub - Sources

Gitlab is a better product anyway IMO. Its CI functionality is fantastic.

They each serve their purpose...and I honestly think MS will make good changes to GitHub in the medium term... They will need to be able to justify the spend on the company and get a return on the asset whilst still keeping it an independent entity.

Definitely! Look at what a great job they did with Skype.

What developers think of Microsoft buying GitHub

Microsoft has reached an agreement to purchase code repository company GitHub, and developers are divided over the sale.

The deal will see Microsoft pay $7.5 billion for the company, and it is expected to close by the end of 2018.

Developers don't like it... finished!

Again with the over the top statements..

SOME developers don't like it... and many of those will probably just be vocal about their displeasure but not do anything about it...

I don't mind it all. We shifted all our products to Azure (after years of disastrous issues on both Google Cloud and AWS). They did a fantastic job with Azure. There is seamless integration with open source products on Azure. For instance, if you need a script to run, it doesn't matter if it's a .NET class library function, Powershell script or Bash script. It just works. Since the .NET Core and ASP.NET has been open sourced we actually have a much more viable way or running products on Linux. I think it's a good move for Github to be acquired by Microsoft in the end. I never trusted Github before because a company that isn't profitable isn't a good place to store your code.

Well Well... see, not all developers don't like it Arty my son...

Can it be worse than current owners? GitHub has been hacked a few times. What would make me move:
1. End of the free option
2. I have to log on with a Microsoft account

There are actually massive traffic spikes from people moving their stuff. I think gitlab alone saw a 10x increase in traffic when the rumours started last week.
