Microsoft has announced it is testing ads in the Windows 11 Start menu

Not going to happen. Vast majority of people can’t install Linux.
Linux installations have gotten so easy now. It's easier than Winblows. Have you seen all the shite than Windows asks now when you install. Do you want this installed, or this or this....

No reason not to run Linux these days.

Haven't run Windows on any of my devices for over a decade now. Never looked back.

Suggested apps are hardly ads in the sense you expected when you read the headline.

Make the right choice when deciding journalists' futures

Until you get that suggestion to install McAfee LiveSafe.
No, until you get an add for Makro or Hippo or Vodacom or any kind of ad you'd get on a website, even on Mybroadband.co.za without adblockers. Haha

I only use the start menu to shut the computer down. Put whatever, I won't notice.

I have news for you. Installing the most popular distributions is easier than installing Windows. How do you create a local account during Windows 11 setup again? No Googling!

Edit: Come to think of it, it's even easier than Mac OS as well.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX. Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called “Linux,” and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project. There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use.

Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called “Linux” distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux
A man of culture, I see.

Thank God management allows me to use whichever OS I like on my work laptop, as long as I'm productive. When someone pops the mechanical hard drive back into my laptop once it is decommissioned, they are going to be greeted with a "Welcome to Windows 10" screen, circa 2017

You're too literal. Suggestive apps would probably be affiliates of Microsoft. Advertising with a banner is just another form of advertising. Word of mouth is also advertising.
I'm ok with that.

I would not have been ok with links to products and services like you'd get on websites.

Installing a Linux GUI has become a piece of cake. There's also no incompatibility as the default drivers can run any hardware on a basic level where Windows will simply give up. Most people in fact can't install Windows and just press the reset button. Where people have an issue is with all of the bad practices Windows teaches and then it doesn't want to work in Linux so they think there's something wrong with it.

I'm probably going to downgrade to Windows 10 and use it until the very last second possible. Windows 11 sucks donkey balls.

Come to think of it, you have a point there, I don't use it for anything day to day, everything is launched elsewhere.
