Microsoft licensing Linux: What is going on?

lol, so their tactic now, in retaliation of free open source software, is to bully others with fears or patent infringements into submission and get them to pay for software MS never wrote? I won't call that clever...

One day, if M$ succeeds, everyone using their products now can thank themselves for being part of the removal of competition, and the ultimate destruction of freedom from monopolies.

License whatever you want Microsoft.... I'm still going to just download the cracked version of windows.

Pirating microsoft software strengthens microsoft, it doesn't really hurt them because, hey, guess what OS you're using?

Some patents that MS holds need to be seriously reviewed.
But, that's the nature of the system. The first one to get it patented wins.

A very sad day this will be if it happens. FUD wins every time, I'm afraid

Patent rights is should anyway be revised in my opinion. Wonder what patents linux is infringing on...

the current patent system is messed up. it seems its only protecting big corporations or people with deep pockets of money. I like Microsoft products, but I dont like the fact that Microsoft is bullying the open source people. just wish we new what patents are being infringed, that way people can work around it.

Is this more or less the same as http://www.informationweek.com/news/global-cio/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=199600443

If that is the case then it is utterly ridiculous.
How does it work if say something has been in your code since 1990
and without you knowing microsoft gets it patented in say 1995? Can that happen?
These companies must grow a spine and just push M$ in a corner.

I still don`t get why novell and the rest just submitted. Surely they have strong legal departments
and a sense for business... or not... Amazing how they use the FUD

I'm not traditionally against Microsoft, but its news like this that makes me (and many other people) hate them for throwing their weight around and trying to force people to do stuff they don't want to do.
Something needs to be done to win back freedom.

Oh well, I'll just carry on using Linux. No one's gonna make me pay for it.
