Microsoft OS dangerously vulnerable

So uhm if you have auto-update enabled would have applied the patch yet?

That depends.
There are essentially 4 different settings for automatic updates.
1/ Automatic, downloads updates when available, installs and restarts at a specified time. This is the recommended one.
2/ Download updates when available but you can choose when to install.
3/ Notify when updates is available but dont download or install anything.
4/ Disabled.

If you have 1 then you should be ok.

3/ Notify when updates is available but dont download or install anything.
I use this one so I can retain the updates and install them on each machine rather than downloading them multiple times. Also means that after the necessary periodic re-install I do not have to re-download them all.

The average person with one machine should just have it on automatic.

ah ok, mine is set to do it asap/1. i noticed just morning it was hanging with update icon but couldn't wait so i left it alone. I'll check when i get home.

That average person will also need a broadband uncapped connection to the Internet. Keeping up with all those updates uses up a lot of bandwidth

The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) urged personal computer owners to immediately fix a dangerous vulnerabililty in Microsoft's Windows operating systems.
Since when does the US Gub tell users to update their software? Since when did MS become a US Gub bitch? (Me wonders whether MS has extended its scan of installed software - what else is being scanned - and where does that information end up?)

I want my money back!! Cr#p - I paid for something that works - but seems it doesn't - 'cause I am forever updating it!!!

DHS also runs the US-CERT (United States Computer Emergency Readiness Team) and they send out quite a few warnings.

I am switching all the users to suse 10.1 at work. transition went susrprisingly smoothly for most of them so far
