Microsoft puts ads in Windows 11 Start Menu

Microsoft has shoved ads punting its own apps and services into an early version of Windows 11.

Windows Insiders in the Dev Channel who installed Insider Preview Build 23435 and are using an offline local account will now be presented with one of several prompts in the Start Menu.

Someone need to write a proper gaming OS without all this bloatware. Vulkan API is good enough to replace DX12, game and software developers just need to jump onboard.

Linux gaming approved over the years?

Linux gaming has improved immensely. Mostly thanks to Valve and Red Hat. Valve also sponsoring a lot of projects in the Linux gaming space.

Stil haven't "upgraded" to the crap that is Win11.
No intention to either.

At this rate I'm guaranteed to become that old angry neckbeard ballie in the corner, maintaining legacy data apps on his legacy OS.

I've been a Linux user for about a year now, so glad to put my Windows days behind me.

However, Microsoft now prevents the setup process from moving to the next step without being connected to the Internet.

Well, I do see a future where Windows XP, Windows 8 and Windows 10 will still be the top used OS's.

My weekly time to shill ControlD :sneaky: It's like pihole, but you don't have to host it. Can setup DoH/DoQ on any device pretty much, and very useful if you aren't at home (or CBA to VPN into your home network for PiHole) - Blocks not only these ads, but also telemetrics/analytics - https://controld.com/browse-faster

I already hated Windows to the point of unhealth stress. They've been progressively cornering us into using more hated features - the app store, the integrated log in to your PC. I hope a large regulatory jurisdiction gets to understand this and fines/regulates them to prevent badgering customers with every keystroke

Or, you know, just move to another type of OS.

After the launch of the M1 MacBook Air I switched from Windows to Mac. Haven't looked back - it's an amazing OS for work imo and the integration with iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch is a sight to behold. Even my mom, who is a supreme technophobe, is now using that Mac just fine. I upgraded to the M1 Pro 16" MacBook Pro early last year.

I wasn't sure about losing PC gaming, but a Series X and PS5 are holding down the fort acceptably in that regard.

At least Amazon has a $15 charge to remove ads  per device

I also don't know how true it is, but I read some time ago that this charge will be increased to $20.

Nobody has device ownership any more, it is all services now.
