I was wondering if Microsoft South Africa has a local patch caching server ? Does anybody know ? If so, how do I get my XP PC to point to the local cache to download the the monthly patch releases ?

Surely the patch downloads must cause a huge surge on the net, especially South Africa's scarce international bandwidth.

Microsoft sues all non-Microsoft patch mirrors and there are no MS patch servers in SA. However, the akamai servers mirror microsoft content (with MS permission), so most MS downloads work over local-only adsl. Thats for downloads (service pack etc) but not for the update function built into your OS.

i.e. Use a download manager like freee download manager to start the download with intl cap. Then connect to local-only via PPPoE and then continue the rest of the download on local-only. Or set up routesentry.

Put preasure on Microsoft SA

Thanks for the reply. Perhaps its time that we start putting preasure on MS to fix this.

all MS downloads use akamai - it should be a local only download.

If MS relied only on one source they'd have a DDos attack every patch tuesday with hundreds of millions of patches being downloaded.
