I picked up a thread in another forum regarding a 'silent' download of SP2 for XP that will bypass blocking.

This seems to imply that a 3G user might get whacked with a massive download that might not be part of his download budget.

Can anyone shed light on this, for the forum? Is this true? Is it already happening? The date is already a month ago.

I can just see the calls regarding billing for downloads 3G users did not know happened.

Dear Premier Customer

The intent of this alert is to provide you with a reminder about the upcoming deadline around the date on which Automatic Updates (AU) and Windows Update (WU) will deliver Windows XP SP2 regardless of the presence of the blocking mechanism.

Based on customer feedback, we provided the ability to temporarily block the delivery of Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) via Automatic Update (AU) and Windows Update (WU) in August 2004, so that our customers can complete their testing and implementation of their deployment mechanism for SP2.

Beginning 12 April 2005 this temporarily blocking mechanism will expire and systems with Automatic Update enabled or interactively download SP2 via Windows Update will begin receiving SP2. Note that this is also the scheduled day for the monthly cumulative release of security updates.

We strongly encourage customers to take the appropriate steps to implement SP2 deployment decisions by that time.

Like the article says, "Automatic Update enabled or interactively download" will be allowed through. The temp block is so that a companies IT dept can block the download of SP2. Once the expiry time passes, then machines that are setup to autoupdate will be able to autoupdate. If you have switched off autoupdate then it still wont update.

The reasoning behind this feature is to prevent a whole companie's computers suddenly downloading the same file for the update. It gives the IT dept time to roll-out the patch using login scripts or such like so that only one download is done. It also gives the IT comany time to check the patch for any conflicts with in-house software.

This does not affect XP home in anyway. Only XP pro
