Microsoft Surface pricing discussed by Ballmer

That's great pricing, seeing that the Surface is not just a tablet, it's a full pc as well, so you're getting two for the price of one.

I'll definitely be getting one when it gets released in South Africa!!

Ballmer should seize the day by the balls and make it afforable :D

Apple and Samsung'll probably throw a hissy fit :D

I'd be pretty happy with that. $800 for a laptop replacement ? Those specs are pretty decent. We'd obviously be paying much more for it here in SA...

I don't really think of the Win8 pro Surface units as laptop replacements. It's just another kind of laptop IMO. $800 would depend on the internal specs.

It would definitely replace my laptop at work, provided I can somehow attach an additional monitor to it. At home it will serve fine for casual matters, in fact it will probably replace my desktop PC for everything except gaming.

The specs for the top end model is core i5, 4GB ram, 128GB SSD. $800 for that ? yes please.

This is actually true... at $800 for the full bore top line spec... i MIGHT just put down the cash for it, as long as I can attach at least another monitor to it.

If the fully Surface Pro only cost $800 it is a no-brainer for a lot of people - especially because it will replace the need for a laptop for many. And it is quite competitive to Ultrabook pricing.

As far as I am aware the Surface Pro comes with a DisplayPort port. You will only need to buy an adapter to hook up monitors and projectors, so add $30 to the price. Unless MS is awesome and includes an adapter!

To replace your laptop completely and be productive I suspect that you might need to carry around a lot of accessories:
1) USB Hub for desk use (Probably externally powered)
2) Keyboard for desk use (unless the cover keyboard is really, really good and not just a nice to have mobile input device)
3) Mouse for desk use (because touching will only get you so far :-) )
4) Portable LTE/HSPA Wifi Router for on the road use (none built in, and you don`t want to waste your USB port)

Portable wifi hotspot on your android/iphone/windows phone takes care of nr4.

That would have been a nice thing if battery life on smartphones were better. I have Samsung Galaxy S2 and frankly I struggle to get through an 8 hour day even with a lot of tweaking - and that is just calls/on-device internet use/app use. And everybody will now recommend "phone X, Y and Z or mod 1, 2 or 3" right now, but IMHO none of them provide adequate battery life, especially when you start hammering the phone with a constant connection.

If you use the phone as a hot spot it will drain battery, very quickly. The iPhone recommends you connect to charger when you use as hot spot.

Yep. Everything requires an "always-on" connected phone. Gtalk, whatsapp, email, etc etc. :(

Sucks for battery life.

I just use a small external battery for emergencies.

Sony make a great one - small and still 2000mAh.

If I look at the Samsung Windows 8 Slate (About US$ 1200) and iPad 3 64 gig (US$ 850) I would wager that the $300-$800 that Balmer is talking about would be the RT version only.

The intel (Pro) version would be $1000 and over price range if you ask me. Esp seeing that the OEM's like Samsung, ASUS and ACER will be releasing their own versions as well and Microsoft will price the tablet as
competitive. <-- Well I hope they do to keep innovation growing.

they will have mini hdmi ports so yes you could, if your monitor supports hdmi...most new ones do..
