Microsoft Surface South Africa launch window announced

MS lost the plot entirely. Why would any sane person want to spend the same amount of money on a tablet that is so limited when an iPad or Android alternative with tons of apps and wide support is available? Why be MS's tester at your own expense? They are still trying to figure this thing out and I am sure as hell not going to pay bog bucks to help them find their way. They should pay me to help them. Windows RT is a flop. Windows Pro has some way to go before it will be practical. For now an iPad or Android equivalent with an ultrabook/notebook is the way to go. There is just no way to replace a mouse and proper keyboard with good tactile feedback for content creation.
 
I've been testing all kinds of variations on the mobile computing theme for a large organisation (field, office, lab and boardroom) and there is just no way to get past a basic principle:

Tablet = content consumption
Laptop/ultrabook/netbook/desktop = content creation

One device just cannot handle both equally well. Touch cannot replace a mouse for many content creation tasks, especially where design work is involved.

Plugging a keyboard into a tablet is just not the same. And a mouse is a must for many tasks which touch will never do as well.

MS is trying to get a jack of all trades but master of none solution out in the market which I cannot see succeeding. Horses for courses remains the best for me.
 
Ok, having used and owning a Surface RT, it's actually a pretty decent device. Bought it from Esquire and sold my Nexus 7 and iPad 2 after using this for a while.
It's a pretty solid device and have used it at work when I needed to remote to a server and reset servers and the like. If at your work place you have testing,dev and production vm's you could manage on just a RT device but as a dev usually you need a VM for home use aswell so it doesnt tick all the boxes but can you do all this with your iPad? You can connect to the network using a USB to Ethernet cable, connect your keyboard and mouse and add an additional monitor aswell.

Considering buying a Pro device but will wait for the 2nd iteration of the Surface Pro to spend that much cash.
Would be nice to have a MS store in SA though.

Remote access options are available for Apple/Android/PC, most are cross platform applications. You can also depending on the tablet/phone use USB or bluetooth keyboards or mice, plug Android tablets into HDMI Monitors or TVs.
Of course once you've done all of that you might just want to drag out a laptop anyway.

The only reason I can see for purchasing a Windows tablet is if you prefer the GUI. Then, if Windows phone sales are anything to go by you're in a small minority. I personally despise the Modern/Metro UI. (Ironically I loved the old Windows mobile 6 interface with a stylus.)

Got my Huawei Ideos U8150 on a $29pm contract, the Huawei Vodafone 858 and Samsung Galaxy Mini cost $100 each, the M900 Android ICS (Delivered Rooted) 9' tablet cost about $215, and the Samsung Siii Mini is on $49pm contract.

Cash outlay (Excluding contracts R3200)

All can access my windows shared folders and NAS storage.

All can remote log in using team viewer (The phones via 3g from anywhere), all can use iTap to as a wi-Fi mouse.

Nope windows 8 is pretty much out for a duck.

Looking forward to giving it a fair try, although I believe it'll have limited success in SA.
