Microsoft to launch Windows 9 soon: report

Microsoft should have produced an cheap ultralite version of 8 for xp upgraders, and provided an off button for the metro rubbish and charms bar.
They did provide a cheap upgrade when it launched.

Why would it be free?

Apple charges for upgrades to new versions of OSX

As with the previous version of OS X, Yosemite is a free upgrade.

I bought Windows 8 for R125 using that unsecure MS website for new Windows 7 owners. Took 3 days for the vulnerability to be fixed.

They used to charge of upgrades, it seems the free upgrade is a relatively new thing.

I think I paid R300 using a legitimate website that didn't have a vulnerability... and even at R300 I was happy to pay it.

Even when Apple did charge, it was usually $29.

I would have had buyer's remorse if I paid any more for Windows 8. Mine is configured to run exactly like Windows 7, so I paid R125 for faster boot times and a more attractive Windows Explorer.

Can't see any compelling reason yet to upgrade from Windows 8.

You were willing to pay for a patch pack?

Of course I wouldn't have paid for 8.1 - I'm just surprised MS didn't try charge for it.

I paid around $29 for Windows 8 and I thought that was a fair price, considering it was usually over $100 prior to that.

I got Windows 8 pre-installed on my Toshiba notebook & bought the Pro version for R140.

Windows 7 Pro was going for R2999!

They are similar priced though, but somebody tried to wangle you an extra R1000. It should go around ~R1900.

Must say that I've adapted completely to Windows 8.1 - don't even miss the 'full' Start button any longer.

It's fast (Windows 7 boot time = molasses) and rock solid.

I ignore the stupid 'native' apps and just use my normal desktop ones.

Happiness

Will surely go for it as soon as it's available. Moved on to win 8.1 on the laptop but still maintaining a win7 desktop just in case
