Hey there! Sooo I've decided to try my hand at programming... :D

I really would like to try some of the .Net stuff, but it turns out I need to get my hands on Microsoft Visual Studio.

Anyone know where I can find & buy a copy in Durbs, please?

I am aware that you can DL a trial copy from Microsoft, but I was hoping to get my hands on a full copy.

Thanks! :p

Download the express edition... There's an iso file with all the express edition version that you can download and write to disc if you really want (it's about 700 odd MB)...

Indeed, Express editions are more than adequate, esp if you are only trying your hand at programming!

You'll be able to do everything in Express.

to make it tad easier http://www.microsoft.com/express/

whats nice is that express studio falls in the category of being a product allowing you to purchase VS Pro 2008 Upgrade rather than the full version saving you around R2000 if you find you like it.

What the other guys said - go for the express version first! Got my VS 2008 Pro a couple of weeks back - loving it!

Yes Visual studio is rather expensive, go with the Express Edition.

If you are worried about the bandwidth cost of downloading the full package, I posted a while back on how to only download certain components here

Wow thanks so much for the info guys! I REALLY appreciate it.

Just to clarify a few things. Express has a trial period, once that expires I have to purchase a license for Express? Once I have that license for Express, I can now upgrade it to Pro?

Download Direct local link
VisualStudio 2008 SP1 Express Edition (don't expire)
VB.Net
C#
C++
Web Developer
Contains NET Framework 3.5 SP1

Enjoy (G)

831mb on local Bandwidth. Can resume Downloads on Download managers.

I got both. But Express and GDK works great as well as Allegro.
Does not work with VS pro.

Note to all first time users
If you going more opensource to get product reviews or looking for LEARNING
get Express First. Learn it well then get Pro...:D

Awesome! Thanks so much again guys! I'm planning on teaching myself, then hopefully do a few Microsoft modules. :D

Thanks for the link Ismail :)

So would Express be adequate if I wanted to do Microsoft modules like say these for example?

Please pardon my stupidity, but when I try & install VS from the ISO, I get this message:

Installation Requirements:

A compatible version of Visual Studio 2008 was not detected on the system. This update is designed for only the Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 (ENU) product family, and is not compatible with any Express editions.
