Yes that is possible, but with respect, a techie solution. The great majority of PCusers are seriously technically challenged and totally disinterested on solving this type of problem.

In this day and age an OS cannot rely on 3rd party add-ins to solve very basic design problems.

In the corporate environment even a missing icon renders the user totally non functional.

I have a feeling that its only tech users that will miss it. I know at the start it might not seem like it but I have noticed once you showed them how metro works they end up loving it.

Its almost the same as Ubuntu and the new Unity interface. Only the die hard techies can not handle Unity, most of the normal people absolutely love the menu-less UI, once they start the get the hang of it. So in a sense Ubuntu did the leg work for Microsoft on this one.

My wife is the perfect guinea pig for Win8 - quite a frequent PC/net user but not in the least interested in technology or fiddling about. Tried RP Metro on her. Her reaction: "Howcome it took them so long to do this? I thought Microsoft spent a lot on research, so why didn't they do this years ago? This is so much better. Please don't change my PC back I prefer this." And that's on a desktop PC.

In the meantime, I'm finding all sorts of nifty little things. Right-click at bottom-left, for example - quick links to useful stuff.

I'm sorry, but OS's is one thing I will not use unless its run/seeded by the original content creator.
Inside the OS is the best place ever to hide mallware as no AV would ever pick it up.

MD5 Hashes FTW :D

MD5 is good to know your download is not corrupt, not good enough to ensure the data has not been tampered with.

That is why M$ also gives you the Sha1 hash. I've yet to see someone attempt a successful 'altering'* of an ISO for malicious intent. But I have not been in the loop for a while now

*Edit: Resulting in the same hash of course.

So the consumer previews expires 15 jan 2012. Then I either revert back or buy it.

I dunno. I reckon getting a tampered ISO to
1) Work as expected 2) Be hacked 3) MD5 collide
is quite a big ask. Much more difficult than just finding a random crypt key that collides, but the key doesn't need to be meaningful in itself. I don't think the type of people prone to releasing sketchy ISOs have that level of skill tbh.

That's how Symbian approached their multiple issues in lagging behind the times and that's why Nokia's changed over to Windows Phone while they sort out their own software division. They're either planning a new Symbian, or they're getting ready for a Microsoft takeover. One of those outcomes will happen.

But in the meantime, I hate Metro. Its ugly, its impractical and its fiddly. It takes anyone, even me, five moves including use of the mouse to shut down the PC from within Metro (just in Metro, there are other ways as well). On Windows 7, three key presses. Let me repeat that, three.

Switching between open apps? ALT+TAB for Windows 7 and 8 in the desktop along with clicking apps in the taskbar, while Metro needs either a click and drag or pressing the Windows key and then navigating to the app you're looking for, or hovering on the top left with your mouse and switching between open apps that way.

If I didn't have to use Metro, Windows 8 would be perfect. But maybe that's why I'm sticking with Windows 7.

Or you could, you know, press the power button once ;-)
And actually, it can be 4 in Windows 7 if the default isn't what you want.

Cry me a river. Sure stick to windows7 and just stay behind. It's so sad that people always object against any advancement because they are so unwilling to learn anything new. Somebody already posted this ;)

Ah well, let's give it a try.

I started my download last night at 11:00 on 8ta directly from M$'s website. By 02:30 mine was done...

So, now, let's see what the hype is all about...

No doubt you were one of the early adopters of Vista.

I push cntrl+alt+del and then click shut down. Or I just click the off button.

If I open one of those app things, like finance for example. How do I get out of it? Or is Ctrl + Esc the normal way. I see no x button.

Move mouse to middle top, click hold and drag to the bottom, release.

But metro is designed in such a manner that you dont have to close apps. It will manage it all by itself, kind of like how mobile works lately. Its not wasting CPU space so you can just switch so it will be faster next time you need to use it.

To use another app, just press windows key and select next app you want to use be it desktop or whatever.
