Use of the ageing Windows XP platform grew in January, despite the cut-off date for the operating system being just two months away.

Microsoft will end support for XP on 8 April, but despite repeated attempts by the company to urge migrations away from the platform, the latest data from Netmarketshare.com shows use actually rose in the past month.

Data from January showed that 29.23 percent of machines tracked were using the 13-year-old platform, up slightly from a figure of 28.98 percent in December 2013.

The figure will no doubt be greeted with frustration from Microsoft, which has tried warning customers that remaining on XP could cause major security issues. It has already extended its Security Essentials support for XP by one year to help firms migrate securely.

But many appear unwilling to move, and numerous V3 readers have declared that they have no intention of migrating to a newer operating system, citing XP’s numerous benefits over other Windows alternatives.

“For individual users, the idea of switching away from XP is a non-starter: with so many application programs running on XP and not Windows 7 or above, why switch?” one reader wrote in 2013 as the six-month deadline passed.

The NetMarketShare data showed that use of Windows 8.1 is still only at 3.95 percent of the market, although this is up from December 2013 when it was 3.6 percent. The growth in Windows 8.1 was matched by a slight decline in Windows 8 from 6.89 to 6.63 percent between December and January.

Windows 7 remains the most popular operating system in use, with 47.49 percent of the market.

Interestingly, the MS Windows 2003 market is still there and at times a bottleneck. Companies did not yet had any concern to upgrade/migrate, plus you have “old” applications not supporting Windows 7/2008 and upwards, many which are in line with engineering calc suites, still know companies on DOS based programs to do structural calculations… they simply do not need to upgrade as the program does what it must do without error, this is but one example.

im still running xp and have no intention of swapping any time soon

In my opinion the whole "HomeGroup" is an unnecessary network privilege application, everything was easier (and in certain cases more advanced) and ready-set-go in XP, although the later editions carried in some way greater plug-and-play support (especially device sharing).

Long live Windows XP !!! :D

I still dual boot it with Peppermint Linux to run Corel Draw.

This just shows how far ahead of it's time Windows XP was when it was first released and with all service packs installed it can compete with others that came after it. I think Windows 7 could be heading for that kind of status as well.

Windows XP, the legend of Operating Systems

Come on people, move to Windows 7! I get why business would not move to XP.

Yeah, Windows 7 will become the new "Windows XP" in a decade's time :D

There's always linux. I formatted someones laptop the other day as it croaked, reinstalled win7 & created a small 20GB ubuntu partition should the schite hit the fan again as a emergency access thing. Said person is now using linux full time which I did not expect as he's never heard of it before and the guy is over the moon with the performance and simplicity of the interface (I hate Unity).

+1 Windows 7 is a very very good OS in my opinion its like it was an upgrade from windows xp.

I still use xp on several machines, mainly because I have more and more licences lying around from upgrades.

Have an xp virtualbox on my pc as well.

Just take a peek at the operating systems on some companies desks when you are out and about. Still tons of big companies using it.

Sent my upgrade proposals through several times and still waiting for approval.
