Microsoft Corp. Chief Executive Steve Ballmer said Wednesday that China's weak enforcement of copyright laws has undermined revenues and pushed the company to focus on markets elsewhere in Asia.

Can someone explain to me why Spain, Greece, Portugal etc. managed to mess up their economies WITHOUT a Zuma or Malema?

I mean, are we such a resouce rich country that we can absorb all the government waste and corruption and STILL manage to have a decent economy?

Nah, it's not that... those countries are essentially developing/3rd world countries pretending to be 1st world. Their GDP, infrastrcture and work ethics prove it.

There are a lot of Eurpean countries who are struggling, trying to behave like they are all the same. It's not true and was a major point when discussing the United States of Europe and other such things. They have been included because they must be and it costs Europe a lot to maintain them... their true colours are just shining through now... next thing you'll know is that Italy will fall in that category too because of how it's half owned/run by the government and mafia.

They make use of patent protections in the US using their financial clout & USPTO etc. Patenting math doesn't sit well with the rest of the world although MS isn't the only culprit. I don't blame China for favoring local companies and spreading Redflag linux. Why should all the money go back to the US?? Baidu dominates search there and keeps revenue local and I partly agree with that. The ridiculous IP lawsuits that get fought abroad and constant world-domination approach by MS sucks.

There has been growing resentment at Beijing's moves to favor local companies including an "indigenous innovation" policy giving domestic products priority in government procurement contracts.

Well damn those Chinese for looking out for their own development instead of providing welfare to foreign companies. The US are such hypocrites in these matters.

We see better opportunities in countries like India and Indonesia than China because the intellectual property protection is quite a bit better.

In other words China is being smart and looking out for their own interests while India and Indonesia are allowing themselves to be bullied into implementing laws and policies whose only goal is the enrichment of foreigners.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner said Tuesday that Beijing had promised to modify the policy.

Well I really hope Beijing is merely stringing them along. What the US always wants is policies that favour them. Ballmer does not give a damn about the people in other countries or what is best for their future development. All he cares about is whether his bank account is getting bigger.

Even though I am a reluctant customer of them, I do not feel any sympathy. I do not agree now with software patents and never will.

It could be interesting to know what percentage of a MS package purchased (OEM or not) gets sent back to Ballmer & Co., and how much is retained (for tax, reinvestment, etc.) in the country where that particular package is sold.
Just a thought.
