Mid range / budget Gfx buy now or wait?

One of my cats knocked over a bottle of vape liquid which I hadn't closed properly onto the top of my case. The lovely liquid dripped through the dual fan opening on the top and onto my R 9 380 through its backplate screws.. Yes I'm a vaper and yes it really was the cat. Needless to say the card is a write off, tested in other pc after cleaning and drying and it runs for a bit then karks out.

So I've decided to use my work pc (work from home) which has an i5 7500 and 12gb ram etc, so it's not too bad. Problem is it has a GT 740 which I got for running 4 screens. The 740 was never intended or expected to run games which is what leads me to my current dilemma.

I need to get a decent gfx card for light to medium gaming. I don't play too many AAA titles but am eyeing Battlefield V and Fallout 76 which won't run on a 740,ever.

I've looked at 1050ti as stop gap measure but the feedback hasn't been great. So I'm looking at a 3gb or 6gb 1060 which should last a bit, maybe 2 years running games at medium? These darn gfx prices are nuts which makes me hesitant to purchase anything at the moment.

However is the 1060 6gb worth getting for my purposes?
Or is there another card I should be looking at, being a grudge purchase I'd like to spend around 4k and woot have a 1060 on special for around that : https://www.wootware.co.za/asus-dua...it-pci-e-3-0-white-desktop-graphics-card.html

Yay / Nay? Should I wait longer for prices to drop? Not keen on a 2nd hand card so that rules out Carbonite etc. Thanks guys.
 
You might want to hold off on buying a card for a few months. It seems like the next gen Nvidia cards will be out possibly next month. Which should hopefully push down the price of the current gen cards or the new cards might even come out cheaper than the current gen.

This, I'd hold out and see what the GTX 11 series cards look like 1st, they should be out soon,

And theres always black friday :)

I seroiusly doubt that. It's months away at best;

On June 5, however, Nvidia’s own CEO Jensen Huang threw everything up in the air when he said we wouldn’t see the next GeForce GPU for “a long time” at this year’s Computex. He wouldn’t be drawn on exactly how long “a long time” actually meant, but it certainly doesn’t sound like Turing will be here in just a couple of months time.

Place your order. The next gen 11xx series are not supposed to be a big bump up in performance based on industry rumor but if you wanna wait its up to you


The 1060 6gb should be able to play the majority of games at max settings & 60fps at 1080p resolution. Some AAA games you might have to drop shadows, grass, distance scaling a notch but it's all good.

All 1060's should easily overclock to 2-2.1GHz on the core and 9GHz on memory so they all perform within 1-3% of each other despite the price discrepancy between models/brands.

Thanks Ponder, might pull the trigger today. You reckon the 6gb is a no brainer over the 3gb?
 
If you want the GTX 1060 6GB then buy it, its a great card, I have the Gigabyte G1 6GB, its perfect and can play all your games on max settings no problem. The new GTX 1180 (or whatever they are going to call it) will only be released before Christmas, and then it's not going to magically push SA graphics cards down in price.. and it'll probably cost R20k.

That 1060 6GB on wootware is a good price, remember that under the skin all the cards are identical, they come from Nvidia, the ASUS / Gigabyte etc just tweak them a tiny bit, no real difference... Just make sure its the 6GB, NOT the 3GB... huge difference there.

Failing that the Radeon RX580 8GB is a newer card and pretty much identical performance... great card too, same price range.

Some screens support Gsync and some support Freesync, depends on the screen and what card you have.

An estimated MSRP of $799 for the new gen flagship will not equal R20k.

Assuming GTX 1180 hits performance expectations, the initial cards should officially launch at $699-$749 for Founders Edition models, and the custom cards will come a month or two later and cost $100 less. There's a chance Nvidia might increase initial prices to $799 or more, however—it can always reduce prices in the future if necessary.

The 1050ti is an amazing card for the little power it draws and the amount of VRAM it comes with BUT at R3500 it's too pricey. Rather put that extra R1k and get the 1060 6gb. I have a 1050ti. I got it a ludicrous flash sale but I wouldn't have gotten it under the current pricing.

then factor in the ZAR/USD exchange rate, then cutoms and vat and all that.... R20k or thereabouts, maybe a cheapy one will be R15k and thats a big maybe but a 1080ti is R15k now... and its supposed to be better than that, it'll never be R10k in SA shops... unless the exchange rate goes to R5 / USD...

an iphone 8 as an example is like $900 on amazon.. .its close to R15k here in SA... its around 30% more expensive.

The USD to ZAR exchange rate at the launch of the 1080 in 2016 was around R16 to 1 USD. It's currently R13.30, so if anything the prices should be on par.

A 1080ti can be had for ~$750 and sells for R15k here, no reason why similarly $ price 1180 should cost R5k more in sa, customs, vat, R/$ etc apply to both equally.

I looked at the 1050ti but the price put me off, considered it as a stop gap but wouldn't want to spend more than 2.5k on something I'd need to replace soon. You're right, the 1060 6gb at 1k more is definitely the way to go. I'll likely be ordering it today.

I like the 580 but my last 2 cards were Radeon so I thought I'd go back to the Nvidia side for a change.
