Middle-aged myopia

Ubuntu, a free Linux operating system and the brainchild of South African Mark Shuttleworth, is now the equal of Windows in many ways.
Come on .. get real. Even the most competent Linux users agree that it is a pain to work with. I'm no MS evangelist .. just a realist.

Microsoft's past trick is to delay the court procedings until they have released something new. That way they undermine the sanctions that are imposed.

I think the smarter EU will clobber them on behalf of the world.

I don't think it's necessary. While I support the company and it's product (well I'm an MS developer, they support me and my family! )

I think Steve Ballmer is the worst thing to happen to MS since it's inception. This article is 100% right. When MS rose to dominance it was like Google, led by technologists and dreamers. Yes, Ballmer and his beancounters were there bundling and canoodling, but you wanted to buy MS Office over Corel office, and no one bothered with Star offices as the other was just better.

MS needs to focus on technological leadership not just spin. I'm still miffed about the ".NET3.0" debacle (It should be called .NET 2.0 + WinFX, but its a long technical saga) A few years ago they were on the ball, they were in touch and even friends of open source. Nowdays it's just Mr Loud and Sweaty.

MS is only losing its monopoly because either there is little else left to monopolise or nothing else they can get away with swallowing.

MS will forever be used as an example of bad business practise. They personify what is evil about capitalism.

Microsoft is the king of the pc world, although there are the peasants all around.... :D

Ubuntu? I just inserted the disc, it pretty much installed itself and worked. I'm not a linux fan, but I was surprised at how easy it was to get going.

No... you are wrong there. Ubuntu has made major strives forward and its extremely easy to work with. As mentioned in that article (I think antowan posted), functionally Vista and Ubuntu are basically equal. I think the only advantage Vista has at the moment is gaming. Kubuntu with beryl/xgl is much much better than that fancy desktop manager the more expensive versions of Vista ship with.

You would seriously have to be very very dumb not to be able to handle Ubuntu... even my mom can.

it does not install under virtualpc tho....

Because Virtualpc is m$ software. Why would Ubuntu bother supporting it when there already are de facto standards which are robust and fast like WMware workstation. Nowadays the politics has changed, it spells "if one can drop windows/m$ one does". Take Germany's state Bayern for example. That's why every cellphone/hardware vendor is rather switching to Linux than windows, and M$ in despair is threatening them, take the case of m$ vs Samsung and a few other IHVs. It's a bit funny, watching their 'get the facts' page one understands what they are most afraid of - Linux. There's no MacOS or Solaris mention, every next word there is Linux :)

Ubuntu works by itself, but when it comes to peripherals it suks just like all the other distros. Drivers are not easily available.

And don't try and put in on a slow PC - it will not even install.

Neither will Vista, no doubt :D
I would agree, there are different versions of Ubuntu, some that will install on an old machine. Server for example and Alternate. Vista is a no go for older machines. I don't even think MS would argue that point. Remember when Netscape dominated the browsers 90% to 10%? Once the momentum shifted towards IE, the tide turned very quickly. China is very serious about Linux and that is one huge market. Games companies are having to make games for PS3, 360 and PC (Windows). How long will it take for the guys at Unreal to release a Linux version? Linux is much closer then the PS3 to Windows.
