What can also happen is that, even after the grommets fall out, he'll be ok for a year or so, before the problems restart. Then there is also a possibility that, once he gets to 5 or 6 years old, the problems might completely disappear.

It's difficult to say what will happen, but continuous middle ear infection is not a good thing, especially if the eardrum ruptures often. Besides the fact that it's helluva painfull, it can cause permanent damage.

Of course, if you are unsure of your doctor, get a second opinion. It always helps to assure you that you are making the correct decision.
 
I had middle ear infections from an early age until I was about 12 or 13. I had about 5 sets of grommets as well ;) :D :p

We lived in the Eastern Cape back then, which gave me Asthma as well, but since moving up the mountain to the Lowveld I haven't had any issues, Asthma is something but a vague memory ;)

Move to a warmer place dude :p

There are two conditions you're confusing here. One is Otitis Media with Effusion a rather indolent, condition where bacteria are usually not the cause and which may need grommets, the eardrum here is intact (looks normal and unless one uses the pneumatic attachment on an otoscopy to visualise
ear drum movement one will miss this problem), the condition is painless
and presents with a full ear and hearing loss. Hearing loss for a prolonged period of time in young kids is not a good thing because they use their
hearing for language development. This condition is not treated as
aggressively as CSOM (below).

The other is Chronic Suppurative (which means "p u ss y" - the yellow stuff)
Otitis Media which is painful, has a ruptured ear drum and causes pus to
drain into the ear canal. This condition is caused by serious bacteria and
can easily spread to surrounding bone, sinuses and even the brain - and
so is very serious. It's treated with suctioning, local and systemic
antibiotics and even surgical drainage.
This thing usually follows acute otitis media - where the ear is very painful,
there may be a fever and the eardrum may rupture.

There is another evil thing called
a Cholesteatoma which is very nasty too and can go with CSOM.
 
I not too sure what to say except that I hope he gets well soon. I am still suffering a middle ear infection myself and on more anti biotics yet again. It is freezing cold outseide and my ears hurt.
 
A grommet is a small tube they put through the ear drum to allow drainage. It's very very minor, and they come out on their own a couple of months down the line. I had a grommet put in my ear drum when an infection caused a burst ear drum. It came out about a year later. In fact, I didn't even notice it. I had my doc check to see if it was still in place, which he confirmed it wasn't.

The only thing you will need is some tight seal ear plugs for bath time or swimming. The ENT can usually make you some by sticking this foam stuff in your ears so they seal perfectly.

Actually I can do one better. I had that. First 7 years or so every year, same thing.

The Docs also wanted to do grommets/pipe thingies, my mom said no.

I think the person who eventually got it to go away permanently was a doctor who was also qualified as a dietitian.

I wouldn't rely solely on natural solutions, but I'd suggest you do the following in addition to whatever the docs say:
*Keep child warm, esp after bathing
*Stay away from sugar
*Drink water
*Keep head&ears covered w/ beanie or something
 
I have to take my almost 2 yr old to sort out his ear, will probably have to go to an ENT guy....these Dr's bills are hectic. He has had a flu that hasnt gone away, and the only thing keeping us sane is the med's that his on.
