Hi

My uncle got an iPad and now wants to use his Cell C sim for data but the iPad only sees the Edge network on 900MHz.

Does any one know a decently priced 3G wifi hotspot that supports 7.2Mbps on the Cell C network?

Cell C should sell one, I've seen it in one of their recent magazines...

But...

The problem is the retards that work at the Cell C stores... I asked the guys at the Kolonnade branch, and they were clueless...

I went in there the other day and wanted to get my gran a speed stick. They wanted three months bank statement so we pulled out her gold card. He stared at us blankly. Evidently they do not know that if you have a gold card you don't need to produce bank statements.

Called Froyo or Android 2.2.1.

Sent from my GT-I9000 using MyBroadband Android App

Since when? A Gold Card is not a free pass to avoid checks and balances. That said, why is the iPad not connecting to the 3G network? That is where I would start my investigation. Do other devices in the exact same location connect to Cell C's 3G? I would hate to see you buying a hotspot when it won't do anything either...

Most places will give you a cellphone contract without even a second glance when you show a gold card, hell its the only reason I got my gold card, simply wouldn't have bothered if there weren't any benefits.

The iPad 1 does not use 3G on the 900MHz frequency which Cell C uses. The only data connection that the iPad can do at 900MHz is EDGE. The iPad 2 doesn't haev this problem. This is why he needs a hotspot.

Bummer! At least I learnt something new though...

Define decently priced? I've got the Trendnet TEW 655 wireless router, but it's very small (slightly bigger than a blackberry) costs around R900 and has a rechargeable battery that lasts 2-3 hrs when not running off mains.

I ordered an unlocked "Three" E585 on eBay - works like a charm!

dude u sure this one works? on cell c's 900mhz frequency?i want to buy the one from ebay too.but need to know for sure

The "Three" E585 definitely works with Cell C on 900Mhz UMTS - just make sure that you get an unlocked one.

Good Day

Cell C has a MyZone router.
work well. 7.2 mbps.
the new one has a dashboard now that you can check balances.
and there is firmware for the old ones to updates them, to allow them to check as well.

Regards
