Hi there,

Noob question, would appreciate some advice.

I have a vodacom data sim in a e5331 mifi router. Can I connect to the Internet with it through a USB cable and if I can how do I set up the connection.

I used the sim in a Vodafone dongle with the Vodafone software so that was easy, but I have no clue when it comes to the mifi device so please be patient and descriptive.

Thank you in advance.

It works fine via USB, I'm using an E5331 here in that fashion, on Win 7. I can't remember though whether I had to load drivers or whether it just sorted it out automagically.

Dang, when I plug mine in it does nothing on its own. Also on Windows 7.
Hopefully someone here can give me some guidance on how to set it up.

Once mifi is plugged in and switched on, go to:

Start>Computer

You will see the modem listed there. Double click on the device and install.

If you don't succeed let me know and I'll give you a blow by blow.

It is a afrihost mifi device that I had to cancel because of mtn's bad network.

Must I install the afrihost mobile program for the mifi device to work or is there other software that I need?

Yes, you can install the Afrihost Mobile Software.

Make sure the device is switched on and plugged in to USB (ie not just plugged in to USB and operating off battery)

Be a little patient and Windows will inform you that drivers are being installed, shortly after that your connection will be active, no other changes or installation necessary.

Okey, after I attached the mifi device to the USB cable switched on it asked to run the Afrihost Mobile Software so I installed it and Windows installed the drivers for the mifi.

When I open the Afrihost Mobile Software, it wants to connect to the Internet but says website not available and also on the bottom right of the task bar where the networks show, it shows a little triangle and says no Internet access.

Anything else that you may think I am doing wrong?

I just replicated your setup (Vodacom data sim, E5331 on Win 7 and had no issues.

Do you have SP1 (Service Pack 1) installed for Windows?

Open a browser, type 192.168.1.1 in the address and hit enter, do you connect to the modem?

It just says Windows 7 ultimate. Can't see what service pack.

And when I type in that address it doesn't connect to the modem.

When I click on the network and sharing centre it shows an unidentified network, with local area connection 2. With no network or Internet access.

I'm thankful for your help and if you don't have any other clues I think I maybe stuffed something up and that's why it's not working.

Sounds like you need to reset the modem to factory default...

Take the back off, you'll see a little button marked 'Reset', press and hold it until all the indicator lights go off.

Make sure modem is connected to PC by USB and power on.

Type http://192.168.1.1 in address bar and connect to modem.

I did everything like you said above and can still not access that address.

I think I must have screwed up something in the past.

At least I can still connect to the Internet with the vodacom dongle. Just wanted to use the mifi to connect to my phone as well.

Thank you for all your help though.

Yes, when I put in that address it goes to the login screen.

So the problem must be with my pc then?

Eiish. I'd swap out the USB cable just in case that's faulty. If it still doesn't work then try another PC running Win 7. After that you'll know where the fault lies.

Okey, already tried another cable in another port and it still wouldn't work.

I'll try out another pc then.

Thank you for all your help. Appreciate it.
