Winnie Mandela was brought to trial in November of 1997 for her involvement in eighteen cases of murder, kidnapping, and torture.
Winnie was formally charged with these crimes but she never did serious time for her involvement. The outcome of the trial shows that whether she committed these crimes or not, she pegged them on the leaders and member of the Mandela United Football Club. For Example, her chief bodyguard was convicted of the murder of Stompie Seipei; for her involvement she was originally sentenced to six years in jail, but through an appeal she was able to reduce the sentence to mere fine,This is how Winnie viewed her trials, "A last vicious attempt to remove me from the political arena. They have tried so hard for decades and failed. This time they'll fail forever"

My first thought is that perhaps she is hauling Mike over to try and add some glamour to her political image ... she may be trying to put a good spin on her possible return to 'respectability' in our parliament
