Miley Cyrus

Miley Cyrus remained firmly in the US show business spotlight Tuesday after her steamy new video set a viewing record on the Vevo.com website.

"Wrecking Ball," featuring the erstwhile Disney teen idol swinging topless on a wrecking ball, drew 19.3 million views in its first 24 hours online, said Vevo via Twitter.

She handily broke the record previously held by the British boy band One Direction.

Cyrus, 20, with an album due out in October, provoked a national stir last month at the MTV Music Video Awards as she performed a raunchy duet with pop singer Robin Thicke.

"Unacceptable," thundered the conservative Parents Television Council, whose board of advisors includes her father, country singer Billy Ray Cyrus.

Thicke himself featured nude women -- but kept his own clothes on -- in the sexually charged video for his summer hit "Blurred Lines."

So it worked.

So it worked.

To what gain? People watch it because they wanted to see if she actually came up with something good (me included) and others to see if she became even more...icky/stupid/risky/"shocking"/etc.

So what did she gain by more people watching her vid?

DUH, popularity.
Just because some folks thought it was offensive does not mean the rest of the world did not turn and look.
Some probably even bought her music off the back of this stunt.

Pretty smart imo.

I doubt she gained significantly more fans because of it.

I'm a 'fan', in that by releasing this stuff I became aware of her music and although I don't like her recent track, the older 'twerking' one is awesome!

Anyone that ignores the marketing genius involved is just acting dumb for the sake of it.
You don't have to like it but it's still a good marketing ploy.
Lady Gaga is a marketing ploy, Madonna was and is a massive marketing ploy, etc.

Most of these artists that shock us are just doing it for the value of it.

+1. If you go by people's comments on the interwebs and in real life, everyone hates Bieber but her following says otherwise.

Me thinks they doth protest too much.
