Millions jump fixed-line ship
28/01/2007 19:45

Berlin - Germany's Deutsche Telekom, the biggest telecoms company in Europe, on Sunday lowered its 2007 earnings forecast after revealing it lost 2.3 million fixed-line customers last year......

The Writing is on the Wall.

I knew from the title this couldn't be an SA article. :(

LOL. Yes. But another gentle reminder to "our" Incumbent Monopoly not to forget ultimately that The Customer has the last say, even if it might take a while longer in SA's case.
If this media report was for SA, imagine Telkom's Share Price pummelling to below R100 on that kind of news.

As it is Telkom cannot increase Fixed Line penetration in our market and that after being the only supplier of this service for decades.

Yeah, major difference unfortunately is they weren't as massively supported by the German government and that government is actually accountable to its citizens. I agree with your point though, just hope "a while longer" isn't too much longer!

Seems technology is starting to help us out ... whilst government may not want to give us alternatives it seems that they may not have a choice with developments like VoIP and mobile broadband.

Okay , but they have more then 55 Million fixed Lines Installed and are busy
putting high speed 100 Mb fibre in. Also offering TV-Voice-Internet. for around 500 Rand monthly no limits all Flat you only pay for the download of a Film, but is not very high

This is how competition works in the rest of the world, I am however not so optomistic that it will follow suite in SA. The fact that Gov has such a large piece of the pie, will still come to cost the SA consumer dearly.

I do however hope that we do follow suite, and Telkom gets its just deserves. Little wonder then that they are scrambling to diversify more into the ITC sector. They must be wetting themselves, and are probably also scrambling to close deals with Gov to secure their future in Telecoms, would be my guess.

/me wonders if SAT3 will ever be opened up...
