Its digital lego. Graphics suck but the algo scales up massively so you can build big complicated stuff.
so it's basically, a basic level editor?
3ds max for beginners. okay - but then can you do anything with the "level" - i mean, is it playable?

While it's still in alpha it's 9.99 Euros.. quite a bargain for what you get. I bought 2 accounts.
Note that the "classic" (free) version is VERY different to the current game.
Current version is called Alpha, and it's known as Survival mode.
There are (very nasty) mobs, as well as neutral mobs (cows, chickens, sheep and pigs so far).
The game is pretty involved. I suggest going to the forums http://www.minecraftforum.net and reading up on it - especially the 'Halloween Update' forum.

You think that's insane?
Some guy built an entire 8 Bit CPU computer, complete with Ram blocks. 100% Working, with Redstone in Minecraft.

He can input binary instructions and see the outputs as binary by a series of torches. What he's doing now, is making a screen from minecraft redstone torches.
It's actually amazing how us humans managed to figure out how to turn the basic 2 states of 1 and 0 (on and off) to create these things that we have today... Amazing.
