Mini Asus packs a punch

My dad got one, the 2gb surf, he also got a e220 modem, whole thing fits in the briefcase. goes everywhere,

With Asus bringing out a new model each week, why can I only find a 2G surf at Incredible and not shake the feeling of being gouged?

Eee

To be more accurate, the screen resolution on the 4G and below is 800 x 480...there is a 800 x 600 mode, but it then scrolls, the extra 120 hiding off the screen till you scroll that way.

Some personal notes:
We got 10 of these at a client, a school with money. All of them 4G's, and i put Windows on all of them. The linux distro it comes with is good. It has all the capabilities you would need for surfing, some games, and word processing, and all those little extras.

My windows version installed Eee's all have 8gb SD cards in, not the fastest types, and it shows, but I installed Office 2007 on it. Surprisingly it looks pretty good on the screen, even Excel, not good for office work but great for working on the move.

For fun i tried to get an old favourite installed on it this weekend: Fallout 2. With the appropriate patches I actually got it running:)

i am an IT professional, and I do think this thing is pretty useless if you consider that for 6k, twice the price for the 4G you can get a laptop that is many times as powerful. but this little white book has grown on me. If you need portability and just something that works for the basics, i would definately consider one of these...finding it hard to not lend one every night:)

Why is South Africa so behind with these Eees? The 1000 series is out already and here's an article about the 701 series? Wtf?

The screen resolution is even worse. its 800x480

I would rather get the Proline U100. its a Rebranded MSI wind. Costs about R4500 and comes with windows, 1GB ram, 1.6Ghz intel Atom processor, 80GB hard drive and a 10" screen with 1024x600 resolution.

Yes its more pricey, but its usable. Still not a desktop replacement though, but a pretty good weekend machine for movies, music and internet.

A friend of mine uses an EEE for giving lectures at University. Is happy with it. But once again.... small and tiny....

Not yet available

The 4G's are the best currently available as far as I know. We get ours from Rectron. But when the better ones come, I would be keen to try one. Those Proline U100 sounds cool, but then again, at that price I would start thinking about a proper laptop. But for portability these rock. Your woman could keep it in her purse...:-)

the article is also factually incorrect in stating the 701 4g has a modem.

it has a modem hole, plugged with a rubber blank, but there is nothing behind it.

options for connectivity are via wireless lan or wired lan, no modem.

the modem hole has been deleted on later chassis.

The MSI Wind U90 or U100 will just go that much further than EEE PC with only 0.1kg extra weight. I have not seen any available locally - thought it seems MSI are still on a backlog. Most recent prices announced by MSI is $350-$500 by the way.

Sahara also have an edu notebook on their site - uses AMD Geode (more from the embedded market) cpu. In the sub 4K retail.
