So my dad is looking for a cheap android tablet - preferably in the sub-R2000 range. There are plenty, but I'm sure there's also plenty of rubbish. What are the minimum specs he should look for? I'm figuring at least 1Gb RAM, 1GHz processor, Android v4.0 or up... anything else? He doesn't need 3G, just wifi.

The best cheap tablet money can buy:

The Nexus 7 baby! And at R2549 i'm afraid to post it here for fear that they might be sold out before I get a chance to order a second one.

Quad Core Tegra 3
IPS display
Newest Android firmware always... need I say more
Minimum specs my a$$

Honestly, there is no point in trying to save a few hundred rand when you're going to end up with a much worse tablet. Get the Nexus 7.

+1 for the new Nexus 7, definitely have to agree that you will not regret the wee bit of extra initial investment.

I'm sure the Nexus 7 is better, but I'm already pushing the budget up from a R1099 cheapo tablet, so I can't push it too far :) What about MSI Enjoy 71? That looks decent, and MSI is a pretty good name.

In that case, than get a Nexus 7 second hand. Some should be willing to sell as an updated version just got released. Just saw one on Gumtree for R2200.

So my R2549 link is too much for a Nexus 7? Btw the Msi Enjoy tablets sucked and their firmware was terrible. In terms of tablets Msi is a no go.

I got a Hyundai t7 which is faster than a nexus 7 for my dad off eBay for around R1500. Its quad core and has the same cpu as the Samsung galaxy s3
Don't settle for crap like the Msi tablet

Another good one is the Hisense sero 7 pro it's $129 but I couldn't find one at the time. It has a quad core tegra 3 same as the nexus 7

Extra investment for the new one with more than wifi yes but not the old nexus 7. Waste of money for people who don't have wireless all day. The new nexus 7 yes looks amazing but don't spend extra money on a tablet with no support for anything but wifi.

Really limiting. Make sure if you buy the nexus 7 or 10 it is new and not old stock. Your dad does not need 3g for sure but don't spend the same money on the old nexus 7 without 3g, rather make sure you get the version with 3g, you may want to sell it or at some point he may need 3g. Don't buy old nexus 7 stock is all i am saying :D.

The OP has a very limited budget and doesn't need 3G. Given this, it doesn't make sense to buy the 3G version. Also, I recommend the old (2012) Nexus 7 as the newer one is 1) more expensive 2) not readily available locally and 3) probably not for sale in second hand condition.

That's the old one, the new one isn't in SA yet and will cost more. The old one is still far better than anything in the price range though, and several times better than the super cheap Fong Kong stuff.

I think that is the old model (Nexus 7 at IC).

The new model has a better resolution and does not have 3G as yet !

Not sure if you are responding to me, if not i will delete the post but http://tech2.in.com/reviews/tablets/asus-nexus-7-3g-review/871082/1#story

It certainly does have both wifi only and 3g versions out, if incredible connection are wrong and that nexus 7 is the old one it should be fairly obvious because the first editions 7 and 10 only had wifi.

Old version http://incredible.co.za/ProductDescription.aspx?SKU=83664 or the new one that is wifi only not sure.

Agreed. The new one has 1920 x 1200 resolution I believe.

The new one is called the HD and there is no 3G as yet.

The old one has had 3G for a long time, I have one of those.

Ok yea i am mistaken, i never knew there was a 3g version of the nexus. I thought both the 10" and 7" were wifi only but i see now actually they released the 3g version last year. I see now yea i am way off and it's the 10" with wifi only.

No problems :D

Also waiting for the new models, preferably with LTE and HD displays. And at least 32GB on board, with an microSDXC slot.
