Hey. What is the minimum pay in SA?
I recently met someone that is working 50 hours a week but getting R3400 pm. It sounds very little to me...

The minimum wages differ from sector to sector and from area to area. R3400 is still quite above some of the minimums I've seen. Then there are also some folk, like me, that are kinda happy to just have a " "job" " and would be happy to accept anything less.

Around 5 years ago I got my first job as an auditing clerk and worked around 50 hours a week, lots of travelling, and sometimes working on weekends for R3000 a month, this is with a completed university degree in accounting/auditing. Glad to say I moved on from that.

Although I wouldn't be surprised that there are people out there earning that amount with 20 years of hard work.

I am shocked. People can't survive on that salary forever! Thank you for the replies!

Hope you gave him a little something ( $$$) to help him out

(While most people on this forum just worry about what the newest version of Iphone/ iPad is out; and why their OS isn't functioning and why afrihost isn't delivering and how bad knot craig junior is ; That pay is sort of reality for manny people in this country )it is time that we start a "double fund" where when you get to the till point to pay your groceries you can just say" DOUBLE" the amount you pay " so your groceries was R800 ; you'll then pay R1600 and that extra money goes straight to a fund for the farmworkers that works for peanuts to put food on the city people's table's ; helping them to live a decent life)

That will help people to put their money where their mouths are ( people that are not really willing to pay more for their food but are willing to criticise the farmers with their mouth full of food for not paying their labourers a ' decent' earning

Casual labourers and cleaners often work for R100-R120 a day. The farmers workers are currently protesting as they earn R76 per day. During the height of the Zimbabwe crises farmers near the Zim border could hire refugee day labourers for as little as R20 per day. It depends on supply and demand to be honest. In the more formal sector like retail stores etc that absorb a lot of unqualified people I think they pay around R10-R12 per hour. This is why its a good idea to actually listen to your teachers and parents and study something. Put a decent piece of paper behind you instead of just a matric and your earnings potential explodes in this country due to how few people actually get post matric anything!

To do your CA? Did you work at one of the bigger firms? Just out of interest, because im starting this year and its far from that.

You can't survive on that salary at all. Just to rent a studio apartment your whole salary is gone.

Edit: Just to compare, a house worker (maid, etc) in Zambia gets paid K200,000 per month. Works out to R341 PER MONTH. :wtf:

Yeah for my CA. It was my hometown back then, Vanderbijlpark, at a small firm. When I moved to Joburg 2 years later, my salary was 4 times that much doing pretty much the same thing at a medium sized firm.

Not necessarily, it also depends on who you work for. I have a few friends doing more or less the same IT jobs, with the same experience and qualification, and their salaries differ rather greatly because of the companies that they work for. One of the guys is barely making a living working insane hours and deadlines, while not a single manager there earns less than R500k+ a year.

It is above minimum wage. If the person you met have signed a contract to work those hours for that money, then that's it. If said person is not happy with that, then let said person resign and find another job. It is as simple as that.

Yea i was gonna say....... Small town though makes sense!

Just because people have unrealistic expectations on how to live today doesnt mean that they should be payed more.. We live in consumerictic world. People clasify luxurarys and wants as needs.

This has no direct comment to the salary mentioned in the opening post.

Do what me and the SO do - help people that you can see is having problems.
You don't need to be super rich, trust me.

we were eating at the beach and then when done I walked to the dustbin to throw away the containers... then the car guard shouts something but I didn't know he was talking at me, and I throw the garbage away. I climb in the car, and the when he catches up he shakes his head (probably for me throwing it into the dustbin) and then digs in the dustbin to find the "fresh" containers.
My Girlfriend only left like 5 chips in the container. We drove to Food Planet and ordered a gatsby to give to him - It was only R35 for this HUGE thing.
Sure, it wasn't a full house or anything - we were pretty broke at the time. I went for quantity over quality... A man is clearly hungry if he is willing to eat 5 chips out of a garbage can.

We took it back, and I promise you, for a measly 35 bucks it was worth it to light up 2 car-guards faces when I brought it to them.

For us, it was only 35 bucks - to them, it was a break from the harsh reality of their lives - sitting next to the ocean sharing a gatsby, instead of waiting for scraps of food from a bin.

So we came up with an idea.
I could buy 10 of these gatsby's during a given month and feed around 20-30 people, for just over 300 bucks. If me and my girl split the bill, it costs me only R150.
I need a little over a hundred bucks and could possibly feed up to 30 people? how can one say no? truly?

You don't really need to be part of charities and you certainly don't need KFC to donate your R2, to make a difference in this world.
Go out there and make somebodies day better - it will make your day better too. no bull$hit.

I don't believe in God or any other mystical crap, but karma is definitely real - be good to the world and it will be good to you.
Don't pray for the poor, you are helping no-one. The churches might spend your donations themselves, and charities may too - go out and feed a person yourself.

The unfortunate reality is that there are many crappy jobs out there and that someone has to do it.

While it is Government's responsibility to set the minimum wage, it's the employer's prerogative to link remuneration scales to those jobs to the extent that they can afford (and not below the minimum wage).

Problem is that it is currently an "employers' market" with millions of desperate job seekers out there.

Best advice that the OP can give is that the "someone" must remain in his/her current position until they can find alternative employment.

Different areas do have vastly different salary scales. My wife's first job was in Muldersdrift and her salary was peanuts. Next job was in Sandton and she multiplied her salary by 5 in no time. Same thing happens between the coast and Gauteng. Living costs in some respects are cheaper at the coast but not that much.
