Ok in short, I have nearly 5 years experience. The company I've been working for I've been with for nearly 2 years now. My salary is the same as what it was on day one even though having been assured I would get an increase after I finished my 3 month trial. I clear R6000. Half of that goes to rent. You get my drift.

Recently I'm starting to really feel the pinch. It's getting to the point where I'm working just to work. My salary. Is this salary acceptable or should I be pushing for a lot more? Or even move on and leave altogether?

I'm not to sure how much a DBA should be getting but know we pay our DBA just under 30 000 a month... he knows MS SQL, and looking after one server only...

You are being screwed by the looks of things... or the company I work for is paying the DBA dude way to much...

Geez - with 5 years experience you should be earning at least 20k CTC in KZN...

Yup that's what a few people I've spoken too seem to think. My dad's company has laborours who carry toolboxes and sweep floors all day long. They earn more than me......

Do you have any qualifications?

I have a HND through CTI. Busy studying at the moment for my last year then will have BSC. I've recently become so depressed with my job and with life, even a simple outing to the mall to watch a movie means I have to count my pennies.

I think it's time I moved on, perhaps to CT. Durban is not good for salaries it's just not...

Why didnt u stay in the UK ?

I should've of but really grew sick of the place tbh. It's overcrowded and weather is terrible. I have quite a lot of family here too so figured I'd make a go of it but so far it's just not working out, at least not in Durbs. I don't work for a small company either we have over 600 staff and are in the medical field.

Like Marty said, I think I'm being royally screwed over. I think perhaps it's time I had a meeting with our IT director. Even a salary of 10 - 12k a month would be great.

Maybe get a few 'specs' from the web showing what other folks out there are earning doing what you do. Use that as a basis for your meeting with the IT chief. Maybe he/she knows that they are screwing you and think that as long as you don't make an issue about it why should they pay you more.

Junior web developer - R100k to R120k ctc p/a.
Support Helpdesk Technician - R15k p/m
SQL DBA - R28k to R37k p/m

Doing what you say you do for R6k p/m just doesn't make sense. . .

MINIMUM yes. With 5 years experience (some of it in the UK as well) I wouldn't give any position under 20k even a second thought. I wouldn't even ask for a raise with your current company, look for something else. That pay is an insult, get out of that **** hole.

Yup and like I've said I may as well go sweep workshop floors and carry a toolbox and earn nearly twice as much. I think as somebody that came from overseas and did not know salary scaling, I have been taken for a ride and it's both sad and disgusting. Only now recently I've become very suspicious and uneasy about my salary, I should've made enquiries sooner but hey, you live you learn. Thanks for your advice about the specs, I will use that in my meeting with him. I suspect I'm going to be looking for a new job sooner because I really doubt I'm going to get what I deserve from this company, they seem extremely tight arsed with all their staff.

Yeah, no problem. It's probably best you find something else and as Cam said, anything under R20k isn't worth entertaining. I'm guessing your current employer would probably offer you and extra R1k and think they're doing you a favour.
Anyways, good luck & keep us posted.

Another issue you'll face is negotiating your new salary. They'll ask for a copy of your old one and will be hesitant to sommer pay you triple. You've been screwed hard, and it'll take some time to recover.

Sorry :(

I always thought the Microsoft job Market in SA was a bit overcrowded. If you didn't like the UK because if the weather, try Australia. IT management in SA sucks.

I do Oracle work in the UK on the coast. Great lifestyle. Journey time to Calais is faster than the journey time to London :)

That's is true, unfortunately. The new prospective employer will wonder why the OP is earning too little. They might think he is not a good developer or something.

He might look at job hopping (if he doesn't get a good offer) for the next 2 years until he gets something better. It's not a good advice but what can you do.

A company that doesn't increase salary annually with at *least* inflation rate values and have "promises" (nothing on paper) of a higher salary after a trial isn't worth staying at unless you're looking for the work experience. GTFO. Your skills are in demand. It's a seller's market out there for IT professionals (provided you can actually DO the job)
