Anyone know the minimum wage for domestic workers for 2009 (urban areas)?

I dont know if there is a specified minimum. I would guess R80 for South Africans... half that for illegal zimbabweans :p

Ours gets R120 per day but seems to have disappeared since around mid December.

We have a 3 bedroom house and her duties include the following

Ironing
Floors
Garage floor
Bathrooms
Spring clean cupboards
Clean fridge
etc.

Does that include transport and what do you do about food?

She eats whatever we have in the house or we buy tinned pilchards and bread or something similar. We don't pay for her transport but we will give her a lift to the taxi rank if we're at home when she leaves.

She starts around 07:30 and leaves around 14:00 or 15:00. We also have her on a rotation to do windows, this happens every month or so. We have about 9 big sliding doors in our house so it can take almost the whole day to complete.

She comes around on Monday and Thursday to cover mess from the weekend and to clean for the following weekend as we entertain quite a bit. It's just myself and the missus in a 230 square meter house so the work isn't too hectic.

That may be the problem...Transport costs average around R30-R40 average per day depending on distance and mode (taxi, train or bus or a combo) and this should be paid over and above the salary at least if you want to keep a domestic otherwise they simply can't afford to work.

I know all this and factored it into her wages. Started paying her R100 and upped it about 3 months later when we were happy she could do the work.

She lives in Dunoon which is about 5 kilometers from us and costs around R12 to work and back.

Its about R120 in Randburg area, 3 bedroom.
I dont have a domestic worker....

I first used this idea ... but then she'd drink a 2l Coke, have 2 loaves of bread, about 6 disprins and half the sweets we bought for my girlfriends child.

In rands, she'd consume about R50 of my stuff in the 6 hours she was there. Nothing worse than coming home, putting your feet up to realise there is no food and you need to go out again ...

R120 a day.
7am-4pm.
I supply food. (I don't mind)
All Cleaning, Washing,Neating and only work clothes for that week:-)

I see. Thanks. IF we pay R150/day for cleaning floors, bathroom and kitchen of smallish flat and a LOT of ironing, do you think we need to add in money for transport? The lady travels from Khayalitsha to us in the CBD...

R1000.00 per month (East Rand)
Mon, Wedn, Fri
7:30am to 12:30-13:00
2 bedroom Duplex
Monday and Wednesday she works at our neighbour in the afternoon for extra money

We pay ours around R360 a month and she comes in 4 times a month for about 5 hours at a time. She stays 3km from us so transport isn't an issue.

That sounds more than fair without adding for transport, how many days?

This is what I don't understand:

Workers who work 27 or LESS hours a week (excl. overtime):
(Urban Areas)

R 6.46 per hour R 174.50 per week R 756.09 per month

How can it be 27 hours or less? So if my domestic works 8 hours a week for me, I have to pay her R174.50? or R756.09 per month? If she works 1 hour a week I must also pay R174.50? This law makes no sense.

Can someone explain it?

Anyway, by this calculation, my domestic should earn 8x6.46 = R51.68. But I pay her R120 a day. So she earns more than double min. wage.

Also, the law states they must get an 8% increase minimum each year regardless of inflation! 8% on R120 means on 1 November she will earn R130.

Yes it's a crappy job, but there are worse things than spending all day in a nice house, with DSTV on and eating out my fridge :)

OMG:eek: How can you people pay these people these wages? Just because a minimum wage exist does not mean we have to pay them that peanuts. Give your domestic worker a living wage. She cleans your house iron your close and you pay her THAT?

5 years ago I paid my domestic R150 a day and that excludes traveling and food. Not because I wanted to be all that but because it is only right. Take your hourly rate double it and pay the domestic that. come on people do the right thing:D
