Cape Town - Public Service Minister Richard Baloyi has hinted that the quality of cars purchased by ministers might be downgraded.

He also admitted that it bothers him that large sums of money are spent on buying expensive cars for ministers during a time of economic stringency.

What do you know, we may have finally got through to the government!

Downgrading the cars would, he stressed, be only one option. But he is prepared to consider others, including one suggested by a participant in the press conference who wanted to see ministers drawing a car from a government pool.

Quite correct, the cars belong to the government and they should be responsible for the purchasing and maintenance of a fleet for the executive. No one can overspend and they all get the same treatment.

What about accountability?
Why is the government ALWAYS allowed to shake off the shackles of accountability?

Here is my answer to Manuel's extremely bad example:
Manuel, you buy the car from government, at cost price with your own money, because this is YOUR ministry that purchased the vehicle, the ministry which you run and are responsible for.
Simple, problem solving at it's best.

Will this be more wind in the bag or action?

I hope for action and appluades Minister Baloyi.

Just means they hit the bottom of the trough too quickly and now some ministers who didn't get are angry.
