Hi Folks

Our youngest son was recently diagnosed with a mild case of ADHD. We did notice for a while now that something is off. He can't still be going through the terrible two's when he is almost six years old now.

Any tips on how to deal with this?

TIA

Take him to a child psychologist or psychiatrist. Do not fall for the Ritalin "easy way out".

Also who diagnosed him?

Have him diagnosed properly and observe him yourself. Define "something off"? That sounds odd.

a hundred times this ^^^

we've lost count of how many friends / acquaintances etc have had a similar diagnosis

ADHD is the "in thing", f-ing everyone and their dog getting diagnosed with it and it seems more often than not it is pure BS ... energetic boy getting up to some mischief at school? ADHD!

get a second, or even 3rd and 4th, opinion from a true professional for sure

Have your child tested by a child psych see if they refer you to an Educational psych.

Keep strong consistent boundaries and very consistent consequences. Don't slip once. Follow up on things you've told him to do. Don't assume he'll do whatever you've said or remember to do it because he's probably moved on already in his mind.

If your child struggles badly with focusing around other kids/distractions then look at putting your son in a remedial school for a while until you both feel confident he can handle being in a mainstream school (public or private). The foundation years are extremely important: rather put him in a place with a smaller class, with less "noise", with teachers and therapists who can actively support and guide him and tailor his learning to what he needs.

Your son won't be negatively impacted by attending a remedial school if he wants to go to university later. And if anyone has anything negative to day about remedial schools they're judgemental and ignorant and not worth your time.

Edited to add: you need the professional diagnosis. ADHD and ADD is overdiagnosed and some kids are just naughty, while others genuinely have a problem.

Kids are kids. FFS!

Don't drug them.

Unless it's with whole foods, and you cut out all the processed crap and sugar. Then I'm onboard with your drug regime.

Maybe the kid hurts small animals? In which case I recommend the Violent Femmes' Country Death Song remedy.

multivitamins with magnesium may help him to concentrate .but be carefull with the hard stuff .

Also not sure how a child has a mild case of adhd. If they actually have it, it's a chemical im balance , more binary than gradual and it takes a LOT of support to cater for it, even with medication.

Correct diagnosis makes the child normal. Not docile or still but simply normal. More than that and you have a problem.

Make sure it's magnesium threonate. The others don't cross the blood/brain barrier.
my daughter is under a sielkundige that actually knows his stuff ,and the product she is on is mainly magnesium with a few additives ,looked in my wifes Mims book at ingredients but never thought about how effective the brain barriers are .her concentration is tops for the last year since being on the correct stuff .the first 2 quacks she was with were just that quacks .

Also not sure what a "mild case" is. Maybe the translation is "pretty much normal but guess we could call it ADHD if you want a prescription?"

Also I think important to ask how and why did you end up getting medical attention in the first place? Did you go in of your own accord, did it come up through some unrelated thing, or did a teacher or someone suggest maybe you should take him in?

If a teacher kicked this off then ja... b***s**t

You've obviously not been reading the responses above it apparently isn't a good idea to drug them. Cause that will turn them into zombies, must be the same people who don't give any medication, you can walk off the pain of that broken arm.

Thanks for this thread. I've learned more about ADHD in the past few hours (podcasts, web and, of course, mybb) than the info that I received my son's teacher this morning. She "diagnosed" him as "very active, disruptive" and "cannot concentrate" and went to recommend Ritalin. She told me to go to the GP today and get a script  Nothing was said about an assessment or therapy. How is allowed by schools!

Anyway, nuf' about that. We will seek professional help. Thanks again.

Please report the teacher and get her fired. Since when does a teaching DIPLOMA let you make medical diagnoses?

Most GPs would refer you if you've got a minor first.

so my parents refused to believe I had ADHD because it was an In thing at the time as well. I mean i was smart and I did well at school.

Eventually in my mid 30's I decided to get Ritalin for myself. the difference that made in my life has been insane. if I had the clarity that comes with Ritalin when i was in high school I would have performed 15 times better academically and most likely made much better choices with my life direction.

by the way my mother was a teacher for the "helpklas" so kids with ADHD on Ritalin that is why she was so against it.

go get a proper assessment. and then go get a second and a third opinion.
and there are many different brands of Ritalin, and all work differently. I went though trail and error with the help of my GP where I tried a month's worth of it at a time and kept track of a few things she told me to look out for to figure what worked best for me. i am lucky its the generic and the cheapest one.

remember those who do not need Ritalin at all will experience it as a massive stimulant, and will be more energetic and more disruptive than ever.
some who have other issues Ritalin will turn them off. the child will be zombie like and simply go though the motions without any emotional attachment. this could also happen with too high a dose.

if your kid takes it and for the first day or two say they feel no different you are in the right area. day 3 to 5 the clarity starts, and after a week of routine use the benefits become clear.
