My HD is failing in XP (I think)
I want to get another drive of the same type and make an exact copy of all my data to the new drive. Unplug the failing drive and be able to boot from the new drive.
Is this possible with XP backup or do I need to do it some other way?
TIA

You need to use Norton Ghost or something similar and clone the drive.

Norton ghost bad.

Acronis FTW

This. And no need to get the same type of drive when using ghost software either. I constantly buy bigger and bigger drives for my system. Clone the small one to the big one,pop the small one out and put the big one as it's replacement in the boot list in the bios

I used Paragon Partition Manager V9 Pro. Took my original 160gig with vista and cloned it to a 500gig (and partitioned the 500 gig 320+180). Worked a charm.

Not only do you not need the same type/size of drive, you can go as far as going from a single IDE drive to a 2-drive RAID-0 SATA (created in motherboard RAID BIOS, to 'doze it looks like a single, unprotected drive) volume and have it bootable. I know 'cos I recently did just that in taking a board from an 80gig IDE to 2x 500gig SATA drives set up as RAID - and a pal o' mine has gone further: he's gone from on-board single SATA to plug-in RAID card. Nor do you need (to *ahem* "buy") fancypants/expensive software, XXCLONE will do the job.
