People don't seem to struggle much with my name very much although I have been called Jim a few times.

EDIT: Actually now I recall somebody calling me Zim too. That was weird.

People tend to cock up the spelling of my first name and bastardise the pronunciation of my last name...

So sorry to here that, Adriaan.

Cannot believe people would actually make a mistake with your name.

Does it happen very often?

That's what I don't understand. My name's right up there with Bob and Michael, but some still find a way to pronounce it wrong.

It happens often enough to piss me off:mad::D

I wonder if the US defense force flagged this thread. An Arab with a nickname, nukefission.
:erm:
Well technically I`m not Arabic...but people do say I strongly resemble an Arab.(wait till you see me in-person,that`l make CIA really edgy :D)

I usually get english and afrikaans names/surnames right.
I occasionally struggle with Black African (not only South African) names the first 2 or 3 times.Usually I ask them to pronounce it for me then I copy them

everybody gets my name wrong in SA, and the reason why it pisses me off is because it's the name one of the most famous musicians of all times, everybody should know him. So it says a lot about the person not knowing this name. annoying nonetheless.

Bono?

i would love to know why people would suddenly start calling me by my surname adding an "e" at the end. this started happening when i was working at SARS and has carried on throughout my career. the minute they see my surname they seem to think this is my actual name i am called by and start calling me by that. i actually have given up trying to explain.

People do not mispronounce my name, but some people who just met me for the first time, such as service providers, shorten my name by only using the first part, which I find overly familiar.

At least Ah-soul is not that far from Arthur. ;)

:D

I make an effort to pronounce people's names as they would. Xhosa names etc with different sounds to 'English' names- at least make an effort. Some people contract difficult names or make up new ones that are easier to pronounce. WTF.

RE Afrikaans names- it can be difficult to know if they should be pronounced in Afrikaans or in English. Unless you hear the person introduce themselves...

In Arabic the letter "P" does not exist (don't shoot me if I'm wrong, an Arabic friend confirmed this).
My friend is working in Saudi and instead of being called "sister Paula", she is called "sister Bolla". :p
