Missing Midrand Student's body found in Veld

I think they meant the mother received a call FROM the daughters phone and not ON the daughters phone.

And how does that make any difference wrt to tracing the location of the phone?

Ask the network operators and/or the police. I was addressing the RICA aspect.

No difference, rica was the be all and end all of cell phone fraud etc.

Do you know how phone comms work? For starters that schite you see in the movies about keeping a person on the line for however many minutes/seconds is BS, the originating party number is transferred before the call even rings over the network. If a cellphone is switched on and registered with a base station determining it's location to a small area is not that hard (especially in a area with a high density of towers) via triangulation and the software they have will do this for you. So if you have all this info it's not that hard for the cops to lock down a small area. But we are to fscking stupid to use technology to solve important crimes like this quickly.

Man found with murdered Student's Cellphone

A 28-year-old man allegedly found in possession of a murdered Midrand student's cellphone will appear in the Randburg Magistrate's Court on Monday, Gauteng police said.

"He is appearing on a charge of possession of stolen goods," said Lt-Col Lungelo Dlamini.

He said the man was arrested on Thursday night. He was allegedly found in possession of a cellphone belonging to Philasande Ngum.

Ngum, 19, was found dead in the veld in President Park, Midrand, on Wednesday.

She was last seen alive at a Midrand shopping mall on May 3. Later, her mother received a call from a man demanding R1500 ransom money, which she paid into her daughter's account.

She was a student at the Midrand Graduate Institution.
