Misunderstanding HDR (big pic warning)?

Ok - I've tried to make a couple of HDR photographs - but they never turn out like I thought they would... any tips on what sort of subjects to use, when to consider HDR, etc.

I generally only take 3 photo's until I can get a tripod - I see some guys use 10 or more photo's - below is an example of what I thought would make a good HDR photo:

Using Photoshop CS3.

I haven't been able to look at the examples you've posted but IMHO ps3 doesn't do the best job. Have a look at photomatix pro instead.

Thanks - I'll look into it - ALL my HDR photo's done in PS3 look bland... might be me though :p

Since im also interested in this, i gave photomatrix pro a shot.

Opened the 3 images, and clicked generate.. Maybe theres more settings that coulda make it look better but here are the results taken at 2 different exposure settings:

I dunno..what u think?

First one is nice :)

Yeh - yours look a bit more colourful - mine looks washed out. Yours would probably look better if you used the RAW photo's - I'll give Photomatrix a try.

Was thinking the same thing.

no no no
you've got it all wrong
if you want to fix that pic, shoot it at the correct time - it's all about timing
hdr will not save you, and raw will most definitely not save you

What do you mean by the correct time? I'm assuming time of day - the problem is when you're traveling, time of day might not be convenient:)

Which one do you guys prefer? PS3, or PhotoMatrix Pro?

Why not upload the RAWs to quickshare.co.za and let us have a bash - I dont know about "saving" it  but I'm sure we could reinterpret it. :)

And can you please not upload such large images? :o

I'll see if I can do it tomorrow morning.

I'll make future images smaller, 1280x is my default size :p Running at 1920x so don't realize how big it is.

nice end result imo. photmatrix

Thanks :)

Play around with smoothing and saturation settings -those are the two settings that tend "create that HDR look"
