Buying Used: Mitsubishi Outlander (2014-2023)

The third-generation Mitsubishi Outlander left our market a few years ago, but is it worth considering as a used buy?

The Mitsubishi Outlander is somewhat of an under-the-radar player in South Africa’s midsize-SUV segment. However, it still offers seven-seat versatility and a reputation for durability that suits our diverse roads. Built in Okazaki, Japan, the third-generation model (ZJ/ZK) launched locally in 2014 and was phased when the fourth generation arrived in 2023 – the latter ushering in sharper styling and improved efficiency to the Outlander package. For buyers in the second-hand market, it’s a value-packed choice – spacious and capable of towing, and later models should still be under Mitsubishi’s five-year/100 000 km warranty.

Introduced to South Africa in 2014, the third-gen Outlander replaced the second iteration with a sleeker, coupé-like roofline and a monocoque platform shared with the Nissan Rogue. The Outlander sported a usable 215 mm ground clearance. The seven-seat layout became standard, with the 477-litre boot expandable to 1 625 litres. A facelift arrived in 2017.

Mitsubishi Outlander Edition 25 in SA: price and specs

Celebrating 25 years of the Outlander, Mitsubishi has introduced the Outlander Edition 25 to SA. See pricing and specs below.

Introduced in 2001, the ‘Outlander’ nameplate has been around for 25 years. Now, to celebrate this milestone, Mitsubishi has revealed a limited-run derivative, aptly named Edition 25. Only 10 examples will be available in South Africa.

So, what sets this anniversary model apart from its standard stablemates? Well, for starters, its ‘Dynamic Shield’ front grille has been subtly revised with additional detailing, the taillamp housings feature a “smoked” finish, and the rear skid plate has been updated with a three-dimensional design. The Outlander Edition 25 is fitted with a set of 20-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels.

Exclusive release: only 10 Mitsubishi Outlander 25th Anniversary editions available in South Africa

Mitsubishi Motors South Africa has introduced the Outlander Edition 25, a limited-run version of its seven-seater SUV, marking 25 years since the model’s global debut.

Originally launched in 2001 under the Airtrek name, the Outlander evolved into Mitsubishi’s core SUV offering. Edition 25 continues with the same platform and drivetrain as the current generation, while adding specific styling and interior changes.

Only 10 units of the Outlander Edition 25 will be sold in South Africa.

Exterior changes

The Dynamic Shield front grille receives revised finishes, while the lower skid guard adopts a more pronounced three-dimensional design. At the back, smoked tail lamp lenses contrast with the red lighting elements, and the rear skid plate has also been redesigned.

The lower bumper sections and pillar trims are finished in black, while it rides on unique 20-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels. A panoramic sliding sunroof is also included as standard.

Technology and comfort upgrades

Inside, the Edition 25 retains the Outlander’s seven-seat configuration and introduces additional technology and trim enhancements.

The cabin features leather seats, with the driver’s seat offering eight-way electric adjustment, lumbar support and memory functionality. Ventilated front seats with three adjustment levels are also included.

A 12.3-inch infotainment system supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with integrated navigation and voice control with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster.

The sound system is supplied by Yamaha and uses eight speakers. Other features include a panoramic sunroof, wireless smartphone charging, USB-C ports and a redesigned centre console with increased storage capacity.

All interior lamps have been upgraded to LED. The map lamp, room lamp, and personal lamp can be turned on and off with a capacitive switch. With the operation of the main switch and individual lamp switches, the lights now gradually turn on and off.

The Edition 25 joins the existing Outlander range and is positioned at the top of the line-up.

It comes with a three-year/100,000km warranty, a five-year/90,000km service plan and five-year unlimited mileage Roadside Assistance.

There is nothing special about it technically speaking, so the only part you could wait for is the red stitching or some chrome bit. Engine is the same, body parts are the same.

Sure the engine is the same but most of the exterior seems to have small tweaks, Different gril, side plates, lower bumper, pillar trims etc. I love Mitsubishi would reather have a look at the new Destinator or Pajero over this.
