Mixed feelings on 8ta

I could really use some definitive information, as I have read through the entire 8ta forum.

From what I've gathered, a lot of subscribers have the same problem: fantastic service for the first few weeks, and after that it deteriorates to an almost standstill speed. What could this be related to? Modem? Location? Can it be that the towers are overloaded? I can't isolate anything regarding this issue.

There have also, of course, been a lot of people pleased with the service and performance.

I have no other option than wireless, and from what I see 8ta offers the best price per data and decent transfer rates. And coverage shouldn't be an issue, I live in South Street, Hatfield.

I am in dire need of advice, I really do not want to sign a 24-month contract and end up paying for rubbish.

This is a hard one to make a call on...damn. :(

I would say it's between 8ta & Vodacom. VC is also aggressively upgrading their network & they do have more cell towers than anyone else in the country, so can't go wrong there & they have much better coverage than 8ta in South Africa.

The 8ta network uses Telkom's backbone, so will not end up like CellC, who became a victim of their own success.

There have been a few glitches in the matrix, but 8ta is busy expanding their network, so expect that to happen from time to time. I have been very happy with the speeds I've been getting from my Vodafone 7.2Mbps router. :)

Really nice thing about 8ta's 3G network is that all the towers are already 21Mbps capable. Since they've been a late entry to the market, they just went straight with the latest and greatest.

However, Vodacom is also upgrading their towers to much faster 3G speeds, so you might find Vodacom's network much faster than 8ta in a few months/years time.

So, you can wait a bit and see what Vodacom does in the New Year, or sign up with 8ta (it's only R199 a month) and when Vodacom offers better deals, use the 8ta sim as a backup. Sorted. :)

8ta still working great after 3 months. Vodacom can go **** themselves. Coverage is at best pathetic where I live, and Durbanville is not exactly a rural area :(
 
I would also like to know, the people who are having difficulty with 8ta, is it coverage issue.. is their pc perhaps infected from all the pr0n they downloaded in the first couple of weeks?

But seriously, I am helping a couple of people sign up to this 8ta contract before the promo ends 31 December.
Your advice would be appreciated.
 
My only issue is it stops throughput often - very often.

I can connect, browse to a website, get up for 5 minutes to get a cold drink - and when I'm back, it won't work. Requires me to disconnect (30-60 seconds in that situation) and connect

I had the same issue with the E272 and E353 modems connected to the TL-MR3420 router, and then switched to the BandLuxe modem which has a better antenna, and it's been rock solid since.

The signal strength is very low in my area, which most likely played a role in the poor performance on the E272 and E353 modems.
