Mixed fortunes for telecoms operators

Africa's mobile telecoms market is becoming an increasingly divided world, with huge profits raked in by the top-tier players while almost half the continent’s operators are bleeding money.

Amazing that this vast continent, where so much gets destroyed, has not yet found a way to also destroy mobile telecoms!

All this rosy talk about growth prospects in Africa is easy,but given Africa's unstable political climate,I woudn't be very quick to invest my money in such uncertainty,especially the mid-continent to East countries like Rwanda,DRC,Somalia etc.

I don't think political instability affect the profits made by mobile operators. If they are interfered with they can always threaten to switch the network off. The communication that cell phones bring generally improves political stability.

These poor networks may have subscribers who are not spenders, but they also have many big spenders. There are also broadband users who are super spenders. The operators don't have any thing to complain about. I have been to many rural west African area and I have seen how business grows when communication is available. There are many millions of Africans who have no utility ( Water, electricity or sewage ) other than cell coverage.
