Might be a silly question, what happens if you have nitrogen in your tyres then top it up with air from the service station?

Don't do it..

You will shorten the life of your tires..
and when Nitrogen mixes with Air you make it MUCH more flammable.. and you could explode your car if you hit a pothole...

Air is about 80% Nitrogen.

Ja. And the 20% that escapes the tyres is replaced with 80% Nitrogen, leaving 4% to escape the 2nd time... After 2-3 top ups with air, you're basically using Nitrogen...

Damn, I thought I'd be able to fly like in Back to the Future!
Will top up with air later.

lol, harsh.

air contains nitrogen at about 80%.

btw what the hell are they teaching kids in school these days -.-'

But its that other 20% that keeps it from being incredibly explosive....

When you have the nitrogen concetration about 95% but below absolutely pure 100%.. it gets stupidly explosive.. this is why its ALWAYS recommended to top up with nitrogen.. it will cause less incidents in the long run. Plus I don't think your insurance company will be happy when you claim for a new car cos your old one blew up, simply because you were too lazy to topup with Pure Nitrogen.....

Lol

Oxygen is a bigger molecule than nitrogen. It will stay in your tyres longer ;)
The nitrogen top up thing is a complete scam.

You really need to update the Wikipedia entry on Nitrogen. They think Nitrogen is pretty inert. Some manufacturers apparently put nitrogen in incandescent light bulbs instead of Argon.

Whilst you are in Wikipedia check out the Hydrogen entry. Hydrogen seems to have most of the properties you think nitrogen has got.

From the AA:

"Slower rate of pressure loss – nitrogen molecules are larger than oxygen molecules (which make up 21% of compressed air)"

One of the reasons it's used in aircraft tyres is because is doesn't explode.
And no water vapour.

Eish.. you ppl are all too damn serious..

Clearly half the posts in here are meant tongue in cheek.... jees.

....

Which is why pure nitrogen is needed. In a fast car, like my CitiGolf, at max velocity the water that builds up in the tire over time will cut through the casing like a Ginsu through a tomato....whazam. In slower cars it may not be a problem though.

PS: If you don't know what a Ginsu is, ask your mom.
PSS: I don't really own a Citigolf, but read on the internet they are real fast...so.
